Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform

We use Veeam Data Platform to perform out of band hybrid backups of our IT server infrastructure and end-user endpoints. The thing I value most about Veeam as a solution is how flexible it is to backup practically anything (Windows, Linux, Mac, physical, virtual (HyperV and VMware) and cloud) and restore to practically anything in a similar fashion. We use it to perform continuous and scheduled backups, as well as for performing migrations (physical to physical, physical to virtual, physical to cloud, HyperV to VMware, HyperV/VMware to cloud and vice versa). I also like that it is aware of some of the database products we use (MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL) and can automate certain tasks like truncating logs, etc.

Pros

  • backing up and restoring on-prem virtual and physical hosts
  • automatically orchestrating the backup infrastructure (backup proxies and transports)
  • automating the restoration workflow (being able to restore in place without having to perform additional manual operations)
  • Reporting and logging

Cons

  • Licensing: allow the use / merging of perpetual and subscription licenses. We have permanent per socket licenses, and subscription licenses to backup desktop workstations. This currently forces us to have 2x Veeam servers.
  • Quick recovery despite initial costs, still beats rebuilding infrastructure manually.

Do you think Veeam Data Platform delivers good value for the price?

Not sure

Are you happy with Veeam Data Platform's feature set?

No

Did Veeam Data Platform live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Veeam Data Platform go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Veeam Data Platform again?

Yes

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), vSphere, CorelCAD, Windows Server
For a modern infrastructure, I can't think of any situation where Veeam isn't suited. My only issues are with legacy infrastructure (i.e. industrial machinery with Windows XP) cannot be backed up as the Veeam Agent only supports Windows 7 and higher. I wish there was an API for to develop our own agent to upload to Veeam for these legacy infrastructures.
