Veeam Data Platform works great in my smaller network of 3 ESX hosts with 20 VMS.
Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform
I think Veeam Data Platform is awesome for Virtual Server Backups, Physical Server backups and also MS o365 backups. Veeam Data Platform helps us move servers from virtual hosts, restore files, whole Virtual Machines reliably and quickly. Instant Virtual Server restore is a life saver when a windows patch prevents a system booting, or some software upgrade goes very wrong (and you didn't snapshot a vm in VmWare). We also use vCenter essentials, so we do not have live migrations; Veeam Data Platform definitely helps us here by allowing us to move servers around. We also started using Veeam o365 backup for more than just our sharepoint repositories. Now that we finally moved to hosted o365 email we can back that up as well with Veeam Data Platform. We also added in a rotating backup for offline backups as a just in case last resort restore option. It was simple for us to just add the offline rotating backup to our backup plan.
Pros
- Instant VM Restore is the most clutch feature.
- Offline rotating drive consolidated from normal backups is great.
- o365 Cloud App account backups is a very nice feature
Cons
- More of an environment issue, but better support for sizing and speed problems.
- Live migrations status bars...seems like the final 1 to 2% functions take the longest as I watch for them to finish. I know the step we are at, but it takes so long as you are waiting for the last bit to complete (VM RAM and system state) . I know they do not know the exact sizing, and it is the last 1 step of the 99 it did, but I get antsy
