Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We migrated to Veeam Backup & Replication v11a from using a third-party backup solution that wasn't really working for us due to cost, system control, and the third-party administrators.

Veeam allowed us to easily configure both on-site and cloud backups for both our server and desktop systems with a minimal amount of research and training. This addresses our need for granular restores and full system restores from local and cloud repositories and integrates easily with our use of virtual machines.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Ease of configuration.
Works well with Hyper-V and VMware ESXi VMs.
Simple restore methods allow for easy restore verification or VM replication.
Very affordable pricing compared to other similar products.
Sales and technical support are knowledgeable about their product, are not located overseas, and are quite responsive.

Cons

Roadmap for future OS support is not terribly clear.
Backups require local storage and direct-to-cloud is not supported.
Bandwidth speed limits are not precise and were somewhat difficult to tune to our specific needs.

Return on Investment

Our yearly estimated costs for backup and storage have dropped by from around $5000 to around $600.
We now will not have someone outside the organization to go to if we need to have a restore performed.
We will not have to deal with unresponsive and unreasonable third-party administrators when we need to perform a restore.

Likelihood to Recommend

Veeam Backup & Replication should work great for performing data backups for almost any user or company that wishes to have a reliable backup plan in place for any or all of their systems. No workload is too big or too small, you'll just need to get the correct amount of infrastructure to support your own unique needs.

In our case, we installed the software on a server in our domain, then used a domain login to easily install the agent on all of our Windows systems transparent to end users who were utilizing the systems at that time. Linux systems required a bit more effort, but once we determined the proper method to install the agent, the control software on our server was able to handle the rest without needing to perform any other actions on each individual machine.

Veeam may be a bit overkill for typical household usage. For those situations, there are simpler options that would likely be a better fit.
