Veeam Backup & Replication
Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication
We back up our production (primary infrastructure) hive via Veeam BR to a FreeNAS device. Some of these are virtual, done via vceneter tagging, the rest are physical, done via agents. We then copy the backup to another FreaNAS offsite.
Pros
- File Level Restoring
- RPO based tag reading across vcenter
- SQL truncation
Cons
- Better interoperability with AWS tiers
- Better design for the UI or description - currently too difficult to guess what does what
- Can be very error prone even if a little scheduling conflict takes place
- Scalable
- Learning curve is smaller
- Support is pretty great (though half the time)

Evaluating Veeam Backup & Replication and Competitors
Yes - Symantec Backup Exec
We replaced it because Veeam came with a lot more features (vcenter level rpo tag) and the licensing was cheaper

- Product Features
- Product Usability
Vcenter level features such as RPO tagging, streamlined a lot of management
Use it for a month or so, test out in a sandbox, push it far and see how that pans out.

Change management was a big part of the implementation and was well-handled - Watching training videos again and again. Thinking of scenarios where it might fail, testing it out the best we can.
- Learning the new systems
Veeam Backup & Replication Training
- no training
Absolutely. Self taught using manuals and videos means you are bridging the gap, not some statement made in a session recorded.
Configuring Veeam Backup & Replication
None. The design seems bad enough to warrant that change first.
No - there is no facility to customize the interface
No - the product does not support adding custom code
none, there is nothing available
