Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use it primarily as a backup system for all our virtual environments. We use it to cross-replicate servers to DR sites. It covers all servers for all departments. The biggest factor in choosing Veeam was the extremely fast ability to recover lost data. The reporting on each backup/replication job allows you to monitor the status of each job. The surebackup and restore feature allows you to test the backups as often as you would like by starting them in a sandbox environment. In addition, this feature allows you to test system updates in a sandbox environment without affecting the live servers.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Backups up VMWare better than any other product.
Allows a safe environment to test your backups.
Allows instant recovery in an extremely fast manner.
Allows archiving of backups.

Cons

Less generic errors would be great.
Better management of data retention policies.
Better management of backups in terms of how much space they use and when they overwrite.

Return on Investment

Less time spent on staff manually testing backups.
Less staff to manage the backups process.
Less stress that the backups actually would restore.

Likelihood to Recommend

Any scenario where you are running a virtual environment you should be using Veeam. I use it in both VMWare and HyperV and find it to be excellent in both. The physical server backup option, while it works and is great, does not seem as polished as the virtual environment. I do not believe there should be a separate charge for physical agents.
