Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Veeam Backup & Replication is our company's primary backup application. The organization uses it to backup to ExaGrid backup appliances and replicate the data offsite. Having a local copy of backups as well as offsite copies allows us to quickly restore critical data. The majority of the data recoveries are accidental file deletions.

Pros and Cons

Pros

It does file-level restores very well.
It does backups using storage snapshots well.
It does whole VM backups and recovery very well.
Easily connects to storage arrays and vCenter

Cons

I find their virtual labs to still be a little cumbersome.
They have a migration tool, but if you aren't aware of it and install a new vCenter instance, Veeam will not recognize the VMs on the new instance because they have new object IDs.
While their upgrade process is pretty refined, I still feel it can use a little improvement.

Return on Investment

The positive impact has been the ability to recover entire HR/Payroll shares accidentally deleted by a user.
A positive impact has also been seen due to a ransomware attack. We were able to restore the files to normal soon after finding the attack.
Negative impact is the cost to license the product.

Likelihood to Recommend

Veeam Backup & Replication is very well suited for file-level recovery as well as full VM recovery. It is also great at being able to recover from a malware/ransomware attack. I guess I cannot come up with any scenarios where Veeam Backup & Replication is less suitable. It has always come through for us.
