Veeam Backup & Replication
Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication
I use Veeam Backup & Replication for backups of all my servers. Veeam used to only be for virtual machines but now supports backup of hardware machines also. I also use Veeam to replicate production virtual machines to a DR secondary site. I know all servers are backed up thanks to Veeam.
Pros
- Veeam Backup is one of those things that just works. I very rarely need to interact with Veeam unless I am making a change to the backup jobs.
- Veeam handles all backup jobs seamlessly from production to backup servers to offsite backups and replicating virtual machines to a DR site.
- Veeam handles any hardware for storage. I have a mix of storage servers varying in age and each work equally well with Veeam. Repositories can be very easily added and changed.
Cons
- I really cannot think of any complaints with Veeam. The biggest complaint for a long time was that Veeam did not work with physical servers but this has since been changed. Veeam is constantly adding new capabilities and never falls behind.
- Veeam is very hardware agnostic and can handle any hardware for storage. I am always amazed at how easily I can add storage repositories on very inexpensive hardware.
- I use Veeam to replicate production servers to a DR environment without needing additional applications. Using Veeam this way is much less expensive than using VMWare's SRM.
- I will soon be doing a migration from VMWare to Hyper-V. This process will be much easier and less expensive thank to Veeam. Without Veeam I would not consider doing this migration.
- Veritas Backup Exec and System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM)
Veeam has made my life so much easier. In previous envirnoments I have to follow strict hardware compatibility and faced many many daily backup job issues. Veeam works so well often times I forget it even exists.
