Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Red Hat OpenShift is used for a lot of different workloads in our organization; web apps, services, ML, and vendor provided applications. Main business problems Red Hat OpenShift solved was speed to market, and allowing developers to own the process and their applications.

Easy deployment
Speed to market
Empowering developers
Ability to easily spin up more pods for heavy workloads

Cons

Complicated setup and maintenance of clusters
Overall cost

Return on Investment

Time to spin up a new app is minutes, as compared to days/weeks for spinning up new VMs
Empowering developers to deploy and maintain applications within their namespace
Allows for more flexibility to deploy applications

Performance

I gave this rating because of recent issues with CPU contention. The majority of the root cause was an extreme over commitment of CPU on the admin team, but part of that was related to Red Hat OpenShift itself.

Alternatives Considered

Cloudera Data Platform

These were both stood up for separate products. Needless to say the workloads on CDP are going to be migrated to Red Hat OpenShift in the very near future.

Red Hat OpenShift overall is a pretty fantastic product. However, I think there is a steep learning curve for administrators of the clusters, and a complicated configuration depending on the amount of integrations. Also, the cost of standing up clusters has perpetually increased, which has become a rather expensive endeavor especially when talking about machine learning,
