We use Xactly AlignStar for our territory management. Honestly, AlignStar is a very powerful tool but we only are using a percentage of the functionality available as we don't need a complex territory structure. However, we do use the Optimizer feature heavily in determining how to allocate our accounts within territories that are balanced.
Pros
Optimize Territories
Manually Adjust Territories
Visualizing territories
Cons
User interface is more akin to a 1990s product
Difficulty when needed to base territories on more than 1 criteria
Crystal Reporting is not flexible
Likelihood to Recommend
If you have reps and need territories assigned geographically then AlignStar is a great option. While we do not have reps in the field, I can see how powerful it can be in aligning territories not only based on estimated revenue or some other metric but also with rep location and driving in mind.
My department uses Xactly AlignStar to create and maintain our field sales territory alignments. We also use it to generate detailed maps for our field sales teams, training department, and recruiters. We are able to import data into the program to make sure our territories are balanced. The additional tools also allow us to determine travel times and ideal rep locations.
Pros
Detailed label options by ZIP code. I know the immediate impact of moving a single ZIP code.
Territory Optimizer. If we are having trouble figuring out the correct configuration for a particular area, its helpful to see what the program suggests. It may come up with something we hadn't thought of yet.
Custom layers. I am able to mark the previous territory boundaries, so if we want to undo a change, I know exactly where we started from.
Cons
After making a change, I have to zoom in or out in order to get the territory labels to update.
I would love to be able to have two different instances open at once. Sometimes we need to compare two different scenarios side by side.
Overall, the product looks and feels a bit slow and out-dated.

Xactly AlignStar has worked very well for us in the past as the tool we use to realign our territories as we grow our field sales team. We are a rapidly growing company and this tool has been great to use each time we expand. However, it would be great if we could somehow incorporate our call plan details into these maps to provide a useful tool to our field sales reps when determining their routing.
Each year we redefine territories for our sales in the US. AlignStar gives us the ability to "right size" territories to ensure proper account alignment and territory coverage.
Pros
territory realignment
realign accounts to sales team
geographic representation
territory scorecard
Cons
updates on territory maps to the field is sometimes slow.
Likelihood to Recommend
Xactly AlignStar works well when your account base is spread over a broad geographic area.
AlignStar is not as effective for those on the Road using a ablet or smart device.
I am the only user of the tool at this point. I use it to draw new territories when needed and produce files for several systems to update territory lines and ensure reps receive commission for the appropriate orders. We also use it to create and display regional maps for various functions whether it be for slide decks or internal forecasting use.
Pros
Drawing territory lines as needed. We currently draw our territories at the zip code level which easily helps us align them with accounts in Salesforce.
Exporting territory files for external systems. We currently use other tools for forecasting and reporting in other manners than Salesforce. The exported file allows us to sync territories on those systems as well.
Creation of territory and regional maps. We consistently create territory and regional maps used for all divisions such as marketing and sales. We also have used it to produce a territory map that aligns our sales reps with our clinical development team.
Cons
Easier functionality to label the territories. We currently still use the desktop app and labels for any feature are rather small and not intuitive.
Speed of the application. The desktop version we currently use tends to be a bit slower and runs into the "application not responding" issue quite often.
Ability for the desktop version to automatically update Salesforce. It would be nice if I could have Alignstar update a field on an account record in Salesforce when I make updates in Alignstar.
Likelihood to Recommend
Definitely a useful tool for drawing territory boundaries and aligning our organization. We have used it for other applications other than territory alignment. It is useful to import a set of data for heat mapping. Although it would be great if the heat mapping portion was a bit more robust than generic icons that graduate in size.

Used to territory align our sales reps based on known opportunities and current customers.
Pros
Ability to split territories or regions into subsections.
Hierarchies to align managers with reps.
Cons
Software is very slow, often crashes my computer.
Likelihood to Recommend
AlignStar works well when there's only one user or stakeholder to view the territory alignments. I only used the desktop application, but it was very difficult to share territories with the sales reps without just screenshotting the application.
Used within the Commerical Operations team to align the global sales team around territories.
Pros
Xaclty Alignstar optimization tool is handy. 1 click optimization where you can weight 2 different variables
Great support team. Always willing to get on the phone and walk you through specific problems
Cons
Very clunky software. Looks like it's from the 90s.
Unresponsive sales representatives. Terrible at communicating.
Likelihood to Recommend
Appropriate for a very basic alignment software. A bit expensive compared to market competitors. Probably more useful if you are starting from a blank slate, but less useful if you already have existing territories where you need to add more reps.
We are attempting to use it to re-align territories for our North America sales team. It is being used by the Sales Ops department to align zip codes to territories.
Pros
Cost - cheap compared to other software
straightforward - relatively straightforward use
Cons
User Interface - outdated
Icons fail to work; software non-operational at the moment
Likelihood to Recommend
Well suited to pull postal codes for North America. Integration with SFDC did not work, and training/support, in this case, was in its infancy stage. Not a good experience.
We are using AlignStar to strategize our sales alignments and overlays for compensation. It is used only in the commercial organization - sales, marketing, etc. We use this to appropriate quotas and ensure fairness across the field.
Pros
Optimization
Data loading
Good UI
Cons
Aesthetics
Too much configuration
Querying
Likelihood to Recommend
AlignStar excels in the ability to manage simple of complex alignments. The optimizer has changed our lives!!
We use Xactly AlignStar (AS) to map, realign, change zips and do everyday maintenance. We also use AS to suggest new territory alignments with the suggestion of territory expert.
Pros
Supports zip to terr
Makes good suggestions for possible realignments
Reports on summary data
Cons
Would like more than 2 sort dimensions
Would like more than 2 weightings
Better maps on PPT

Works great in Pharma. The software is great at suggesting possible realignments, and is very easy to use. I'd like to see better advanced training options for experienced users.
