Our organization uses Unitrends for our on-premises disaster recovery solution. While we have some services that are cloud-based, those have their own disaster recovery mechanisms. Unitrends provides a very good 1-2-3 solution for our aging on-premises servers and has been invaluable as a peace of mind solution allowing for simple roll-back capabilities during upgrades as well as secure knowledge that all core systems are safe if disaster should strike.
Pros
Integration with SQL Server databases for full and incremental backups
Agents are easily deployed and upgraded for VM hosts
Pulling backups and either deploying or performing in-place restore jobs is straight-forward and intuitive
Regular reports of success/failed backup jobs makes managing any issues easy to diagnose
Cons
Like other solutions, Unitrends does require [the] use of agents for hypervisor hosts and database servers
There is an upfront cost for the on-premises hardware (though they do allow you to roll your own)
Some on-premises configurations need to be done via console/SSH rather than through the web interface (such as setting up TLS)
Likelihood to Recommend
Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery has been very well-suited to ensuring secure backups of all of our on-premises servers. Using its agents, it is able to seamlessly backup our SQL Server databases, virtual machines, and their hosts (both Windows and Linux) and has proven to be capable [of] quickly restoring existing backups. Once the initial configuration is completed and the backup schedules are optimized, it runs in the background with virtually no attention required.
We resell managed backup services to customers and I use the free version at home with my home family servers.
Pros
Compression and deduplication.
Retention policies.
Command line access.
Cons
License fee is ridiculous now.
More frequent backups over taxes the system.
Restore interface could be easier to understand.
Likelihood to Recommend
It works well if you have a lot of money to spend on licenses and only need to back up once or twice a day. You really need to bulk up memory and processor count if backing up a lot of data, but the system doesn't tell you that... the storage just fills up for no apparent reason.

We have used Unitrends Backup Appliance to backup on-premise infrastructure consisting of physical as well as virtual servers, and to cross-replicate data among four office locations, for offsite storage.
Pros
Simple to configure appliances and backup jobs.
Efficient use of storage.
Very low maintenance product.
Easy to update.
Cons
No support for sftp or ftps, only ftp.
Comes out of the box with SMBv1.
Likelihood to Recommend
Very reliable product, it's well suited for virtual and physical server infrastructure. Great when you need the benefits of simple to configure backups and peace of mind that you have this level of protection. Had a few issues at first with some physical server backups but after some troubleshooting those were resolved. Haven't had to troubleshoot backup issues in over a year.

Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery provides our company with backup support for a range of virtual machines in VMWare hosts. It is used by the IT department to back up critical appliances in case of disaster, power loss, or hardware failure and to quickly go back up online.
Pros
Unified appliance.
No need for additional host os.
Automated back up.
Easiness to set up.
Cons
Storage management is somewhat confusing.
Licensing and appliance configurations are hard to find.
Themes will not work.
Likelihood to Recommend

We use the Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance to provide backup and disaster recovery for the servers in our company. We are located in a single building that houses our 80+ employees and coming from tape backups, the Unitrends solution has made my life as the only IT support person here so much easier when it comes to backing up, protecting and restoring data.
Pros
Reliable, scheduled backups with de-duplication and compression
Fast and painless restores from a web interface
Bare metal restores
Included support for Exchange and SQL
Cons
While easy to access, the web interface does not seem very intuitive at times making it more difficult to navigate than it should be.
Likelihood to Recommend
The Unitrends appliance has worked well in our environment where we still maintain several physical servers while also supporting backup in a virtual environment as well. Unitrends includes support for specific servers such as Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft SQL servers, where other backup and disaster recovery solutions often charge a premium to support those types of platforms. I'm not really aware of scenarios where the Unitrends solution would be less appropriate.
It's a small company. It's being used for all backups and archiving in conjunction with ExaGrid devices. It moved us from a tape solution to a disk based solution.
Pros
Ease of deployment
Management of backup jobs
Detailed reporting and alerting
Set-it and forget it config
Cons
Exchange granular restore direct to mailbox
Ease of finding backups for restoring in GUI
Likelihood to Recommend
Be sure to properly scale requirements based on storage and retention. I never find this easy or direct.
We currently use Unitrends appliances at 5 locations. We are primarily located on the East Coast so disaster planning is usually related to tropical storm activity. It's also related to any unknown disaster (natural or otherwise). We were looking for a cost effective all in one solution. Unitrends allows us to backup locally, cross-replicate backups, and utilize the Unitrends appliance as a recovery device (in some cases). Cloud based backups were considered, but we wanted to keep all of our data within our control. We are using a 'private cloud' configuration to replicate local backups to remote locations.
Pros
Decent user interface to create backups. Management of backup schedules is relatively simple.
Ability to keep your data under your control, private cloud replication is good if you have multiple sites.
The Unitrends appliance can act as a server in certain cases. Physical servers can be "spun up" on the appliance while you fix or replace down servers, saving the cost of redundant hardware for recovery.
Cons
The replication process is damn near impossible to set up yourself. Even the installation tech at Unitrends was having difficulty setting up cross-replication between two sites. Replication often breaks after Unitrends updates.
Regardless of what a salesperson tells you... Replication can only be pushed to one site. You can not send Site A backups to Site B and C for redundancy, only to one of them.
While physical machines can be brought up on a Unitrends server, Virtual Machines can not. A separate hyper-visor server must be in place to host your VMs. The hyper-visor mounts the VHDX from the Unitrends box.
Various bugs get fixed and reappear with new updates. For example, hot-fixes that get applied to our systems, are not consistently incorporated into releases.
Likelihood to Recommend
Unitrends might be good for a single site with cloud based replication. It does not work well for internal replication between sites. We've also found that their version control is problematic.

Coming from a Veritas software solution using tape libraries, the Unitrends appliance is a godsend. The simplicity of management compared to our old solution is significantly better. The stability (less failures) is higher and our flexibility is greater. Using Incremental Forever reduces our backup windows to a fraction of the usual time and allows us to backup throughout the day rather than once, or even once per week. Being able to quickly recover physical or virtual servers, and even hosting them on the appliance itself, give us another powerful tool in our DR toolbox. I have absolutely no regrets on our purchase of Unitrends and highly recommend it to any I speak with. To put it succinctly, it makes backups simple.
Pros
Simplicity of management. You won't need full-time backup specialists to handle your DR... unless you really want to.
Incremental Forever shortens backup windows to near-nothing. Backing up critical systems every hour (not once a week) is now a possibility!
Recovery back to virtual hosts, bare metal, cloud, or host on the appliance. You have a lot of options.
Cons
Error reporting and clarity could be improved. Some digging required or Support assistance.
Pricing could always be lower, but it was still well worth the cost.
Could improve reputation by vetting potential clients better. It seems the appliance/software either works perfectly (like ours) or something major doesn't work at all, based on other reviews and conversations. Trials or better client evaluations could uncover some of this before it turns into a problem.

I believe for a small to mid-sized organization with a small staff, this is a great option. Larger entities with dedicated backup staff may find more complicated solutions that work better for their complicated environments. Also, if you're environment is fairly vanilla using industry standard/leading software and hardware, things should work perfectly. But if you've got some oddball configurations or home-built solutions, you'll want to trial out the system before committing fully. It's not for everyone... just maybe 80% of us.
I am using the Unitrends Appliance to backup all servers virtual and none in my server farm.
I have over 30 servers and workstations used by departments for specific applications and kiosks.
I like that every morning I receive a Unitrends report that tells me what backups succeeded and which failed. And actually once you have it all set up correctly the backups run without fail unless your server drops off the network or reboots during backups due to Microsoft updates!
Since going to Unitrends I don't spend hours a day verifying backups, I just get my email report and address any issue from said report. If you are in IT and doing backups to tape....wake up and move to the next century! But seriously if you are still doing tape backups check out Unitrends!! I did and we cant wait for our free upgrade in 2 years!
Pros
Set up up one time and don't have to touch again!
Restores from Unitrends backups are easy to run when you have to, just make sure you are keeping up to date backups!
Big strength is it is scalable and you can add more hard disks if needed!
And free upgrade after 3 years to next model up!!
Cons
Did take a little learning curve to set up and get comfortable with!
On units older than XP - don't try to backup!
On servers older than MS 2003 - Don't try to back up too old...

We were spending hours a day on our tape backups and not all of them always succeeding. But since I switched to a Unitrends solution we get daily reports in the [morning] that tell me which backups were successful and which failed but once you get it set up correctly, failures generally only happen due to network outage or server reboots in middle of backups. Unitrends has several appliances for all size companies from big to small so give them a shot as I am so very glad we did! Tapes are old school and slow. Unitrends is faster and easy to deploy and get to your backup in case you do need them for a server restore or all the way down to a just a simple file restore!
The Unitrends appliance is used to backup all data on our on-site servers. We use it as part of our disaster recovery planning and for the ability to restore individual files and folders as needed.
Pros
Unitrends support is far and away the best support I've ever received from any backup company. Support requests are answered quickly, by knowledgeable staff, and they proactively follow through until issues are resolved to my satisfaction. Best of all, they have on-shore technicians. I'm not trying to knock the knowledge and expertise of foreign support, but avoiding the language barrier is always a plus.
Recovery is quick and easy. And if you don't know what you're doing, I will refer you to my aforementioned thoughts on Unitrends support.
Encrypted replication to the cloud is awesome for disaster recovery planning. This plan also includes forever backup.
Cons
There is a learning curve to learning how to set up and manage backups.
I dislike the need to swap back and forth between the new UI and the legacy UI.
Likelihood to Recommend
If you want robust, bulletproof backups, Unitrends is a great option. If you want encrypted off-site replication for Disaster Recovery, this solution is for you. If you want DRaaS (Disaster Recovery as a Service), look no further.
If you want the cheapest option available, look elsewhere.
