Unique Learning System works for all Students

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I utilize Unique Learning System as the primary curriculum to teach my class of 6th grade Alternative Learning Environment students. These are students with a large variety of disabilities and whom are at various stages functionally and socially as well as academically. Most are 4-6 levels below their current grade level and all have behavioral and functional needs that are addressed in the school setting.

Pros

  • differentiates reading lessons
  • provides paired visuals to text
  • uses thematic based units to repeat key concepts
  • incorporates functional skills

Cons

  • Incorporation of more Social Studies and Science resources
  • more cooking vocabulary and safety lessons to foundational lessons
  • assessments are confusing for new users

Return on Investment

  • data tracking
  • IEP support
  • ease of planning

Great Product for Special Education

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Unique Learning System helps me keep all of my curriculum streamlined. It also works in concert with N2Y, L3 skills, and Symbolstix. My students learn the symbols and vocabulary, which also reinforces their AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) language systems. I particularly enjoy the science and social studies activities. I have been a user for about 13 years, and improvements are always being made.

Pros

  • Stays current
  • presents content in an age-respectful way
  • includes characters who look like my students

Cons

  • I’d like to see more units added instead of the same 3 year rotation
  • more accessibility features, particularly for students with vision impairments
  • videos to go along with the units

Return on Investment

  • Time saved on planning
  • a cohesive look with materials
  • Assigning homework

ULS as a Special Education Teacher

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use News2You daily during social studies with my high school special education students, and I use the ULS transition band while working with my high school students in the area of life/job skills. I have 9 students total. I also use News2You and ULS during extended school year/summer school.

Pros

  • differentiated reading levels with picture support
  • constantly updated articles and materials
  • ease of login for students with disabilities
  • broad variety of topics
  • easily accessible games for students of all cognitive levels

Cons

  • Features for planning units are very confusing and time consuming when it is only a small part of my curriculum
  • The transition band has a lot of great surveys and topics, but there needs to be more for students that will not work independently at a job when they leave school. Right now is more focused on students that will work in competitive employment.
  • I use the assessment and benchmarking piece a bit, but I don't assign things to my students to do independently because I don't really understand how to do it outside of planning a full unit.

Return on Investment

  • gives me more data to share with shareholders
  • I save at least an hour of planning time for IEPs
  • benchmarking makes tracking reading levels a breeze

Unique Learning System Review

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Unique Learning System is used as a supplemental curriculum for students who are on Florida Access Points Standards. This program is accessible for teachers who teach these students, as a resource in meeting the rigor of the Access Points standards. Teachers are also able to record student work and monitor data. There are very few resources for students learning on FL Access Points. Unique Learning System is a leader in providing tools to support their learning. That being said, much of the content does not directly correlat to the Florida standards. I believe Everway is aware of this as a company and is responding by bolstering the "Courses" section. It's progress (!), but has lots of room for growth. Our students take standardized tests at the end of the year, so we need to ensure they have quality instruction that aligns to the Access Points. Florida Alternate Assessment Blueprints are a great starting point.

Pros

  • Built in data collection
  • Visual representation of content
  • Defined differentiation

Cons

  • The online website feels very dated as a whole. The website seems to perpetually lag. Teachers and students struggle to log in and navigate the platforms resources. Student log in is cumbersome - an app would really streamline the process.
  • More content that is directly aligned to standards. I understand that you serve states all around the country, so this is a huge ask, but I would assume that there is some overlap in content requirements between states.

Return on Investment

  • There has been nearly 100% improvement in data collection for teachers who began implementing Benchmark assessments and Unit Checkpoints. Many teachers don't have the time or capacity to create their own data tracking tools - if it's not provided, it falls through the cracks.
  • When content is applicable, Unique Learning System saves on planning time immensely. It is a grab and go resource, but also customizable based on student needs.
  • I like how the checkpoints are modeled in a similar fashion to our Florida Alternate Assessment. This helps students practice how to test take throughout the year.
