Great Product for Special Education

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Unique Learning System helps me keep all of my curriculum streamlined. It also works in concert with N2Y, L3 skills, and Symbolstix. My students learn the symbols and vocabulary, which also reinforces their AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) language systems. I particularly enjoy the science and social studies activities. I have been a user for about 13 years, and improvements are always being made.

Pros

  • Stays current
  • presents content in an age-respectful way
  • includes characters who look like my students

Cons

  • I’d like to see more units added instead of the same 3 year rotation
  • more accessibility features, particularly for students with vision impairments
  • videos to go along with the units

Likelihood to Recommend

Unique Learning System is well suited for students in self-contained classrooms who need to access grade-level curriculum. I would love to see more life skills incorporated for students who are working on functional skills. It doesn’t translate well to the general education classroom for students who go to inclusive settings.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Unique Learning System and my district as our primary curriculum for students on an alternative graduation plan. the students love the interactive lessons as well as the visual supports that are embedded. The teachers love the real time, data and progress monitor. as an administrator of the system I love the reports. There are no specific business problems that I see as a relates to my district. my only suggestions relate to having even more.

Pros

  • The differentiated lesson
  • Accommodations like visual

Cons

  • More curriculum options for the transitional periods like kindergarten sixth grade
  • Having a feature in which administrator’s can login as the teacher to fix problems

Likelihood to Recommend

One scenario where I have found the Unique Learning System to be particularly effective is in providing lessons for students with cognitive impairments and significant speech difficulties. These students require more intense and specialized instruction, and this curriculum offers the support they need while targeting the specific skills they should focus on, in alignment with the state curriculum.

However, students who are preparing to transition to resource classes may not benefit as much from this curriculum. Additionally, some of the assessments may not align well with the lessons, and they may not adequately address the targeted skills necessary for transitioning into a less restrictive environment.

Lots to See and Do

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Unique Learning System to support the curriculum I teach in my severe LINKS classroom. I use it for circle time and whole group instruction. The main use I have for Unique Learning System is the SymbolStix feature which I use for a number of applications in my classroom. From visual schedules to PECS boards to adapted books, I use it constantly.

Pros

  • well organized site
  • clear content
  • engaging material

Cons

  • lesson breakdown
  • sorting of books in n2y library (when you go back, you lose original search parameters and have to start over)
  • need a go back to beginning feature in books

Likelihood to Recommend

In my severe LINKS classroom, Unique Learning System is well suited for a number of activities. I have experience in Kindergarten as well and I think it would be useful with regards to SymbolStix and social stories. I could see application for inclusive PreK as well. I do not see as much use for gen ed classrooms in the upper grades like middle and high school, but I also haven't interacted with that content as much.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Utilizing Unique Learning System has proven to be highly beneficial this year. As I further develop my understanding of both Unique Learning System and Polaris, I have come to recognize how they assist in assessing students' academic standing at various points throughout the year.

Pros

  • Different levels
  • Breaks down the subject as well as the topic
  • wide variety of lessons
  • immediate results

Cons

  • On the students' main page, lessons need to have subject categories. They are all combined. Hard to narrow down.
