Unique Learning System is widely adopted by Educational Services professionals to deliver specialized, differentiated curriculum for students with significant cognitive disabilities, spanning K-post-secondary education. In TrustRadius reviews, educators leverage its integrated visual supports, particularly SymbolStix, to enhance accessibility and support Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems. The platform significantly streamlines lesson planning and IEP management, with 10 of 14 reviewers noting considerable time savings.
While the system fosters breakthroughs in student communication, particularly for non-verbal learners, reviewers frequently point to challenges with user-friendliness and navigation, impacting teacher efficiency. Concerns also exist regarding curriculum depth, academic rigor in core subjects, and limited bilingual options. Overall, the system is highly effective for its core purpose of specialized instruction and compliance, but efficiency and content breadth remain areas for improvement.
Pros
Delivering differentiated instruction tailored for diverse student needs and IEPs
Streamlining lesson planning and Individualized Education Program (IEP) management
Integrated visual supports (SymbolStix) enhancing accessibility and AAC systems
Comprehensive progress monitoring for student data and compliance requirements
Fostering communication breakthroughs for non-verbal learners
Cons
User interface and navigation complexity impacting teacher and student efficiency
Limited curriculum depth and academic rigor in core subjects (science, math, ELA)
Insufficient accessibility features for students with vision impairments
Lack of comprehensive bilingual and language options for emergent bilingual students
Need for more diverse units and content to meet varied student requirements
Unique Learning System helps me keep all of my curriculum streamlined. It also works in concert with N2Y, L3 skills, and Symbolstix. My students learn the symbols and vocabulary, which also reinforces their AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) language systems. I particularly enjoy the science and social studies activities. I have been a user for about 13 years, and improvements are always being made.
Pros
Stays current
presents content in an age-respectful way
includes characters who look like my students
Cons
I’d like to see more units added instead of the same 3 year rotation
more accessibility features, particularly for students with vision impairments
videos to go along with the units

Unique Learning System is well suited for students in self-contained classrooms who need to access grade-level curriculum. I would love to see more life skills incorporated for students who are working on functional skills. It doesn’t translate well to the general education classroom for students who go to inclusive settings.
ULS has been used to effectively implement learning to students of diverse disabilities from grades Kinder to post secondary. Daily use of the programs allowed students to engage effectively while also tracking their progress through monthly assessments.
Pros
Lesson plans tailored to specific groups with activities modified for each group
Provide pre, post and monthly assessments
Provide resources for vocational and daily living
Cons
Make it more student friendly with easy navigation
Provide alignment with state assessments
Offer opportunities for Emergent Bil

Well suited for students with various disabilities. May not have thr rigor needed to continue to help students grow
I use Unique Learning System and my district as our primary curriculum for students on an alternative graduation plan. the students love the interactive lessons as well as the visual supports that are embedded. The teachers love the real time, data and progress monitor. as an administrator of the system I love the reports. There are no specific business problems that I see as a relates to my district. my only suggestions relate to having even more.
Pros
The differentiated lesson
Accommodations like visual
Cons
More curriculum options for the transitional periods like kindergarten sixth grade
Having a feature in which administrator’s can login as the teacher to fix problems

One scenario where I have found the Unique Learning System to be particularly effective is in providing lessons for students with cognitive impairments and significant speech difficulties. These students require more intense and specialized instruction, and this curriculum offers the support they need while targeting the specific skills they should focus on, in alignment with the state curriculum.
However, students who are preparing to transition to resource classes may not benefit as much from this curriculum. Additionally, some of the assessments may not align well with the lessons, and they may not adequately address the targeted skills necessary for transitioning into a less restrictive environment.
I use Unique Learning System to support the curriculum I teach in my severe LINKS classroom. I use it for circle time and whole group instruction. The main use I have for Unique Learning System is the SymbolStix feature which I use for a number of applications in my classroom. From visual schedules to PECS boards to adapted books, I use it constantly.
Pros
well organized site
clear content
engaging material
Cons
lesson breakdown
sorting of books in n2y library (when you go back, you lose original search parameters and have to start over)
need a go back to beginning feature in books

In my severe LINKS classroom, Unique Learning System is well suited for a number of activities. I have experience in Kindergarten as well and I think it would be useful with regards to SymbolStix and social stories. I could see application for inclusive PreK as well. I do not see as much use for gen ed classrooms in the upper grades like middle and high school, but I also haven't interacted with that content as much.
It is used in our school system to help students with social skills, personal development, as well as meet the needs of students whatever they may be and anytime of any day. The problems that are addressed arrange from health to social problems.
At my school district we use Unique Learning System in our self contained classrooms at every level from kindergarten to Transition to Adulthood. It provides adapted curriculum with age appropriate content for our students. It's online platform makes it so we can access anywhere at anytime and its fairly easy to navigate.
Pros
Adapted content
Unit lessons with topics relevant to students
Cons
More robust reading content

Unique Learning System is perfect for any age group of students with disabilities in a self contained class. If I am talking to a teacher who teaches a self contained classroom, I will almost always bring up ULS.
I use ULS daily for my social communication level 3 supports class. The visual supports are great. Having the units available for the year is helpful in planning! The benchmark assessments are great for assessing student needs and growth!
Pros
Differentiating answer choices and text levels
Science experiments!
Integrating vocabulary into monthly theme
Cons
Healthier recipes but the visual supports and recipe reviews are great
Adding the daily calendar feature for all users not just the News2You subscribers
Likelihood to Recommend
ULS allows for differentiating instruction and has a depth and breadth of content.
Utilizing Unique Learning System has proven to be highly beneficial this year. As I further develop my understanding of both Unique Learning System and Polaris, I have come to recognize how they assist in assessing students' academic standing at various points throughout the year.
Pros
Different levels
Breaks down the subject as well as the topic
wide variety of lessons
immediate results
Cons
On the students' main page, lessons need to have subject categories. They are all combined. Hard to narrow down.

I use ULS with my students to do daily center work and to assess them. I teach foundational literacy skills such as letter identification, phonological awareness (rhyming, blending), early sight words, and emergent reading strategies. Also, I early numeracy concepts like counting, number recognition, one-to-one correspondence, basic shapes, patterns, and simple addition and subtraction through concrete activities and visuals.
Pros
counting
number recognition
letter identification
Cons
More academic rigor
more in-depth math lessons
stronger phonics program
Likelihood to Recommend
It can be repetitive for students with more severe disabilites.
