What is Symantec Encryption?

Regulatory compliance, data privacy concerns, and brand reputation often become powerful motivating factors for organizations to take advantage of encryption technologies. Organizations are challenged to protect their sensitive information and ensure compliance with limited resources. Symantec Encryption offers an integrated management platform to allow organizations to:

  • Quickly deploy and manage their endpoint encryption solution from a single console
  • Have the right mix of self-recovery and help-desk support for their employees with Symantec’s multiple recovery options

Symantec Encryption also offers extended management capabilities to provide support for native OS encryption (BitLocker and FileVault) and Opal-compliant self-encrypting drives.

  • Individual and group key management
  • Automated policy controls
  • Out-of-the-box, compliance-based reporting

Categories & Use Cases

Very good product and still getting better

Pros

  • The user experience and the robust combination of PGP and SEE to make SEE 12 has been outstanding.
  • E-mail, file and whole disk encryption are excellent features that give great protection for my environment.

Cons

  • Needs to be more granular when it comes to managing external storage devices such as USB drives.

Return on Investment

  • Protection of our data. We have had several laptops stolen since implementation and this had protected our data.

Symantec Endpoint Encryption Review

Pros

  • We can manage and view the status of each client from a centralized server.
  • It sync passwords with the local Windows account so there are no additional passwords the user needs to remember.
  • Our help desk is able to use the One-time password feature if the passwords get out of sync and the user is locked out.

Cons

  • The process to set up a user account is a real pain. Symantec requires the user answer a bunch of security questions if they need to reset their password, but no one ever remembers the answers to the questions that they selected.
  • Since we use this for remote users who don't always connect to our VPN, when they change their network password it isn't always reflected in Windows and the Symantec Endpoint Encryption (SEE) passwords frequently get out of sync. When the user eventually does connect to the VPN, they do sync and really throw the user for a loop in which passwords to use.
  • We found a huge problem with SSDs where an encrypted drive operated twice as slow as a mechanical drive. I believe this was addressed in a later release.

Return on Investment

  • I can't think of any positive impacts to ROI. To my knowledge, we've never had a laptop go missing where SEE had protected the data. I guess that's a good thing?
  • Negatively, we spend a lot of time getting it to operate effectively (usually during the boot up/logging in process). Which is usually only a temporary fix because passwords never stay in sync because of our environment with off-site users

Other Software Used

Symantec Enterprise Vault, IBM MaaS360, Skype for Business, Microsoft Exchange, WebEx Meetings

Symantec Endpoint helps the end user with friendly SSO Capabilities

Pros

  • Single Sign On

Cons

  • User Interface
  • Global Management
  • Password Changes can be slow, and are confusing for end users. Perhaps a prompt to remind them to use their older credentials?
  • New users complain about slowness due to the first time encryption process. This is to be expected. A on-screen notification to the end user encryption is currently happening would be nice.
  • We require check-in every 60 days. Sometimes even though the device has been on the network the device fails to check in with the SEE manager.
  • Cannot manage disks once drives have been encrypted. This is a part of the design but annoying. We twice had to expand out-of-space drives and could not due to the encryption. We had to decrypt the entire drive and then re-encrypt to perform this task.

Return on Investment

  • Ability to take machines offsite
  • Protect Patient Information

Symantec Drive Encryption best in class

Pros

  • Symantec Drive Encryption does 256 byte encryption.
  • Connects to Active Directory to allow for single sign-on.
  • Automatically encrypts drives without needing user interaction.
  • If I forget my password the software has recovery tokens to allow access to the drive. Recovery tokens are provided from the management server.

Cons

  • The bootguard customization has specific requirements that are sometimes hard to match.
  • Self recovery questions have to be manually created on the management server or on the client locally. It would be nice to see some hard coded questions that you could use.
  • The management server admins are difficult to figure out at first. This process could be explained better in documentation.

Return on Investment

  • Keeps our company compliant with HIPPA and other requirements that our customers have.
  • Does not affect user's day to day work.
  • Increased security for mobile employees.
