SketchUp 3D modeling software

Rating: 10 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

The design department is using SketchUp 3. It's a great and easy CAD software.

Pros

  • You can create different types of 3D models, from architectural sketches, as it is widely used, to furniture, toys, mechanical parts, that is, whatever you want.

Cons

  • I don’t have anything to complain about SketchUp 3D, is a straightforward software that everyone can learn.

Likelihood to Recommend

With SketchUp 3D, we can clearly and simply, with well-defined and developed tools, and the SketchUp 3D library, the software provides an incredible response to commands. And with that, we can quickly create different shapes and volumes.
Like the physical model, always used in architecture, 3D modeling allows us to advance in terms of time and precision, with materiality and spatiality that no two-dimensional design would allow.

SketchUp is for easy design

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use SketchUp to design different types of prototypes. I also used SketchUp to develop design demonstrations. It is a helpful tool with less technical aspects and the design flow is easy to understand. I did the design and modeling of my Do It Yourself kits and basic model sketch using SketchUp.

Pros

  • Easy work flow for developing the design and models.
  • Less complex work area.

Cons

  • Can not add specified details and dimensions.
  • Detailing becomes difficult as the complexity of project increases.

Likelihood to Recommend

I would like to recommend SketchUp for project modeling and design of rough sketches with less detailing. When your design requires complex detailing especially for the mechanical components, SketchUp is not what you are looking for. In that case different CAD solutions are available in the market. Apart from these, working on small prototypes or simple designs SketchUp is the best solution.

SketchUp is a great beginner software with limitations for larger and more precise projects.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use SketchUp for quickly developing 3D models of ideas. It has been useful for demonstrating machine aspects, home projects, and conveying the general idea for the customer.

Pros

  • Easy to pick up and use.
  • Intuitive buttons and menus for tools.
  • 3D that is available to anyone.

Cons

  • Measurements are limited.
  • Great if including a renderer application.
  • More file export options.

Likelihood to Recommend

SketchUp is great as an introduction to 3D for education, home projects and a very useful tool for how easy it is. Higher level CAD systems (such as CATIA or SolidWorks or NX) are needed for professional applications.

The simplest 3D way

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

My company uses SketchUp to make sketches of the cabinets for the electronics that we develop. Before final production, designs that are developed and tested from 3D printing are designed in this program. The main problem this tool solved was the time that elapsed from when we made the order for the design team to when we had the completed prototype. Now we ourselves are the ones who design, thanks to SketchUp, and then we print to test them.

Pros

  • It helps to visualize objects in three dimensions.
  • It has a very user friendly interface that has to use all its commands.
  • There is a large community of people who use it willing to help, and also a great official technical support.
  • It offers great compatibility with most 3D design CAD programs.

Cons

  • The work area is small, not supporting large projects.
  • You need a computer with a video board powerful enough to take advantage of the entire software.
  • It does not have enough materials to render, and those that are not realistic enough.

Likelihood to Recommend

It is advisable to use SketchUp only on those occasions when designing a rudimentary prototype, and not a definitive version of a final product. It is ideal to capture an idea and be able to communicate it to the rest of the team, although not for the professional presentation of the product.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I don't use SketchUp for work but I do use it for personal reasons. I've just been diving into it and I must say, it's really cool. I love being able to simply conjure up 3D designs and tweak them to my liking. With 3D printing being more and more available, there's a world of possibilities for people who previously would not have had the knowledge to create physical products.

Pros

  • 3D modeling and design.
  • I am not good at drawing so being able to use SketchUp to rapidly prototype is super helpful.
  • I find it's really helpful for visualizing a concept and making immediate changes. All without having to actually hold an object in front of me. Or without wasting resources on building something that won't work.

Cons

  • It's not a super simple tool to use. I find it quite tough sometimes to navigate around. And I'll often just get my camera lost because I moved too fast or panned too far.
  • The interaction of 3D objects takes some getting used to. As with most great things, there's definitely a learning curve.

Likelihood to Recommend

It's quite easy for a beginner to pick up and start using. It's quite tough to really get the hang of it and learn the more complex interactions.
