Likelihood to Recommend
It is appropriate for steady state thermal management problems
We use Simcenter STAR-CCM+ as a general-purpose CFD solver for things like cooling systems, lube systems, exhaust systems, external hydrodynamics, etc. It is extremely user-friendly, easy to automate, and very capable as a single-tool multi-physics solver.
Scripting language is Java, not Python (for instances that built-in automation doesn't cover)
Error messages not always the most helpful
Cannot change simulation settings without license
Likelihood to Recommend
Very good at running large parametric studies or design optimizations where pre/post-processing can be automated without scripting. Mesh generation is very automated and easy to use. Single-GUI multi-physics (CFD, FEA, electromagnetics, etc.) makes running complex sims such as fluid-structure interaction very straightforward and less error-prone. It is a very general solver with tons of capability; therefore, the learning curve can be quite steep for someone without simulation experience.
We use Simcenter STAR-CCM+ to perform CFD analyses on a variety of topics mostly within the automotive industry but also in other sectors of industrial research. The software allows us to extract all the important performance indicators like pressure drop, heat transfer coefficient, noise level, transient behavior, etc.
Pros
CAD manipulation and repair.
Conjugated Heat Transfer.
Automated Meshing.
Design of Experiments.
CFD modelling in general.
Cons
Mode advanced user coding.
More extended use of GPUs.
Likelihood to Recommend
Very well suited for multiphase flows, conjugate heat transfer, and ICE simulations. Also, the advanced 3D-CAD modeling features allow us to not need a dedicated CAD modeling software (for ordinary tasks). Somewhat less optimized for advanced turbomachinery modeling with respect to competition. The GPU acceleration feature is interesting but it needs to be compatible with more physics models and preferably not require an additional license.
I use it for 2D/3D designing and analyzing the strength of the structure under different kinds of forces and calculating the maximum deviation and moment. It's good to have tools at the beginner level, easy to learn, use and teach to others. It's economical too. You can develop a different types of parts, structures, and shapes in it and perform their analysis based on the requirements and data available. You can then re-adjust the forces to see the variation in former and latter deviations & moments.
Pros
Calculating deviation
Calculating moment
Modelling
Cons
Stress analysis of pipes
Animation showing how deviation would proceed in a solid.
Likelihood to Recommend
To calculate the bending moment and deviation on a solid object under a specific force, starCCM+ is very reliable. But, to calculate thin wall stresses under fluid, it lacks behind. Eg, for calculating the bending moment on a solid and hollow pipe of the same radii under point forces and uniform force and thus comparing results for both types and see which performs better under which force.
