Overview
Synthesised from 5 reviews | Last Published April 24, 2026
This product overview is based on a synthesis of 5 recent reviews analyzing software regularly used alongside Semrush and reviewer likelihood to recommend those tools. The review sample size is small, so findings should be considered directional. Semrush appears to be used in conjunction with other SEO and design tools. Specifically, Canva and Screaming Frog SEO Spider were each mentioned by two reviewers. The reviewers mentioning these tools leaned towards recommending them, suggesting positive experiences with these complementary tools, but the small sample size warrants caution in generalizing this sentiment.
Pros
Integration with Canva for design workflows
Compatibility with Screaming Frog SEO Spider for in-depth site analysis
Semrush is used in our Marketing Analytics paper, meant for second-year undergraduate students. The tool is used to illustrate how data from third-party platforms can be used to inform marketing decision-making.
Pros
Easy to use.
Great support.
Certifications that complement the use of the platform.
Highly-recognised industry-level tool.
Cons
Access to students was a little limited, perhaps providing access that corresponds to the certification videos would be helpful.
The duration of the access for students could be extended.

The tool is great to use and provides students with the much-needed hands-on experience. The online certification courses complement the use of the Semrush platform in the classroom and provide students with an advantage in the job market. The Semrush team was very helpful throughout and provided us with great support.
We use SEMRush for in class exercises and real world group projects - the students use it while consulting to a startup and helping them design their digital marketing strategy. This was an integral part of their Search and Social Media work for the project companies.
Pros
SEO- detailed analysis
SEM - Insights
Cons
Complex product
New social features are good and should expand

I think this is a great product for a hands on SEO or content marketing specialist, and it's almost overpowered for a typical user. Those focused more on social media can find more dedicated tools for management and posting, as well as analysis.
I use Semrush to teach students SEO, SEM, and Display advertising strategies and tactics. Semrush has been wonderful to use in the classroom to help students practice online marketing techniques (Keyword research, Site audit, competitive analysis & content marketing). Students find Semrush helps them easily grasp the critical skills needed in online marketing.
Pros
Competitive Research - Gather insight into what the competition is doing for SEO and SEM
Site Audit - Quickly allows you to find technical SEO issues and provides suggestions for correcting issues
Keyword Research - Provides insight into question and long-tail keywords
Cons
Data Accuracy - Sometimes the position tracking and KD % are a bit off. However, the data provides you with a decent gauge for making decisions.
Learning Curve - If you are new SEO or SEM, it may take you a bit to learn the all the tool sets in Semrush. However, they provide a lot of good tutorials as well as a helpful blog.
Cost - The tool is worth every penny. However, some smaller businesses or freelancers may see the cost as a barrier. They should do a cost benefit analysis to see how this product can quickly pay for itself by saving time and growing the business.

Semrush is an all-in-one research tool for online marketers who manage SEO, SEM, Content Marketing, and Social Media.
I provided my students the opportunity to trial Semrush for a graduate level course on Digital Marketing. Over the course of the semester, the students used Semrush while analyzing a few companies for a multiphase group project that focused on SEM, SEO, Social Media and Website performance.
Pros
Competitive Analysis
Top Sources of Traffic
Gaps vs. Similar Companies
Cons
Evaluating Email Marketing
Evaluating Social Media
Evaluating Smaller B2B Websites
Likelihood to Recommend
Semrush is well suited for evaluating companies with higher volume web traffic.
I started using Semrush while preparing my study course "Interactive Marketing & Digital Consumer Behavior" for Master's students' at Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences. We use it as a tool for practical seminars which I found very handy, as it provides very extensive information about the online presence of certain companies. I think Semrush is a very useful tool for lecturers if they want to make their classes more interactive and practice-oriented. Will continue using this platform further for my research and teaching purposes. Thanks for being a great product!
Pros
User-friendly
Up-to-date
Extensive information
Cons
Doesn't show all info about European companies (e.g. Latvians)
No possibility to track info in different languages equally (e.g. Russian, Spanish, etc)
Likelihood to Recommend
User-friendly and comprehensive design, extensive information for research and analysis
The platform is used in an educational context. We use it when we work on individual and group projects on cases of small to large enterprises, usually within the sector of consumer goods, for courses in Digital Advertising and Digital and Social Analytics. Based on the platform data students do brand and digital marketing audits, competitive landscaping, identification of salient attributes in consumer decision-making process, among other things and come up with recommendations about digital advertising campaigns as well as strategic digital communication suggestions.
Pros
The interface is really intuitive, very easy to understand and work with.
It has integrated educational components, leaving no room for misinterpretation of what you are looking at.
It includes all the necessary tools required for making strategic communication decisions, all in one platform.
Cons
It's a minor thing, but during use, and while switching from tool to tool, e.g. from competitive intelligence to keyword tool, the brand/website is 'forgotten' by the platform and one has to input everything from scratch. I would fix that and go further to make suggestions to the user expanding their options.
I would also consider providing some additional tools, such as maps of keyword links or keyword prominence that's context-relevant.

I cannot say if this is a product suitable for any type of business need, however I am very certain that this is fantastic when used in a digital communication (strategic or tactical) context. It provides depth and breadth of information, multiplicity of tools that cover you fully (from finding previous campaigns to identifying competitors keywords for SEM or SEO) and all of that in a highly user-friendly platform.
SEMRush is being used to keep our company in the know about our organic search rankings, keyword performance, and page performance in the SERPs. SEMRush is specifically used by myself to get a better handle on which pieces of content are ranking for the most search terms, which pieces of content are ranking highly for said search terms, and what percentage of our traffic is coming from specific landing pages and/or search terms. It's an incredibly valuable tool for any marketer that's interested in the organic or CPC health of their website.
Pros
SEMRush does an excellent job of providing insights into every keyword your site ranks for, individual pages rank for, and how much traffic each of those keywords is driving
Keyword/competitive research is a strong point of SEMRush, from being able to analyze competitors' search positions and traffic, to finding new keywords your site can rank for, there's a myriad of possibility within SEMRush to get the upper hand on competitors.
The whole interface is very user-friendly, so the crossover features between SEMRush and Google's products that offer similar functionality are much easier to pick up on.
Cons
A very minor thing, but it's not as easy as clicking a link to view a page that ranks for a certain term. The links are always internal and point to the page analysis for a particular page. It would be nice to just click on that link to view the page, but the reasoning for the current UX makes sense.
It would be nice to see what percentage of the total search volume for a query ends up on your site. For example, a query with 15k searches/month might yield 10% of my business's organic traffic, but I have to calculate what that percentage equals in sessions and then find that as a percentage of the total search volume. Easy to do on a one-off scenario, but a pain to export and do formulas every time you want to do that analysis in bulk.
Likelihood to Recommend
SEMRush is very well suited for anybody looking to do keyword research and keep an eye on their site's organic/paid health/traffic. For raw search/keyword research it is my favorite tool on the market, especially for the price. For those looking to mine backlinks and that are more focused on growing a backlink portfolio, a tool such as Ahrefs would be more appropriate as it's competitive analysis across all dimensions and it's backlink indexing is much more robust.
