PTC Windchill is a product lifecycle management tool used by manufacturing. It can be accessed through Internet anywhere and anytime. Basically, it includes entire data related to products such as drawings, CAD, Testing results phase-wise from Proto Level to Mass Production. It also includes design to change records and change management from development to the mass production phase. In addition to it, it integrates well with other CAD software such as Autocad, Creo, NX, Solidworks, CATIA V5, etc.

Pros

It is compatible with all devices and operating systems such as web-based, Android, and iOS.
It allows user to customize its interface based on their requirement.
It provides a digital part list with all required data like Part Name, Part No., Weight, Material, etc.
Searching data is so facile that one can get data without any trouble.

Cons

The price for PTC PLM premium is comparatively high in contrast to other Product life cycle management solutions.
Customer support services need to improve as they take a lot of time to resolve the issue.
WT parts need to be create for all the parts to create windchill BOM.

Likelihood to Recommend

It provides in-depth product information such as Technical Data, CAD model, 2D drawing, ECR document, ECN document. Integration between windchill and creo is seamless. In addition to it, it provides necessary tools for data transfer, distribution, reviewing, and publishing of product data. Moreover, one can manage the complete product life cycle just on the web.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Windchill is the the software that we use for product lifecycle management. I am using this software for BOM Creation, Check in and check out of data and cloud storage for all design related documents. This software is being used by other departments to finalize make or buy and cost management also. It helps us to do ECR and ECN very smoothly.

Pros

VIEW PARTLIST.
ECN and ECR.
Design data storage and smooth access.
Workspace management.
Assy structure making.

Cons

Extract partlist should be directly in Excel because everyone time we have to convert it to Excel.
ECN report formatting need improvement.
Many times part no doesn't go to ERP even after ERP released state.

Likelihood to Recommend

While doing Engineering change it suits the best and saves all the time and even you can conduct CFT meeting while doing ECN. You can easily attach all supporting documents for future reference. For big assy while extracting partlist it is very difficult to understand structure of assy so it can be more eye catching and easy to understand type partlist.

Our organization is using PTC Windchill as a PLM software. We are using windchill for many purposes like part creation, BOM creation, check in/check out of CAD data, document management, check in/check out 2D data, releasing of part numbers into ERP by using windchill, Engineering Change creation & release.

Document control & management

Cons

Data synchronization with off-server data can be difficult in several cases.
It's okay if the WT section and the drawing are distinct, but it shouldn't be there.

It helps solve the age-old question, what is the best way to get the most important information into the hands that need it. It helps organize your company information.

Likelihood to Recommend

For larger companies that have multiple locations, it is a great tool to control the data and to get the data in the hands of the right people. If I was a startup or a smaller company, I would not use this based on the fact that most of the functionality wouldn't be used.
