Planview Portfolios is best for organizations that want to streamline their production and flow. It is also great for companies that need to figure out capacity management in their organizations by giving them a view into their supply and demand of resources.
We use Planview Portfolios to manage our portfolio of Digital projects across the organisation. The key business problems we are trying to solve are around gaining visibility of all Demand across the organisation and how this feeds through into a prioritised portfolio of deliverable work.
We have leveraged the tool to provide a consistent approach to capturing / defining work and planning key milestones, capturing delivery risks and resources/roles required to deliver the programme.
Pros
Flexible, highly configurable toolset to support a number of different business processes.
Product suite is constantly being updated with new features and a high frequency cadence of releases.
Good integration with dashboarding capabilities both internal and external e.g. PowerBI.

While the initial configuration is fairly easy to leverage to enhance the full features some core technical experience is required (this may not be available within the client's team - PV do provide a very good customer support service).
Enhancing the work planning capability. There is so much available that it can sometimes be a little overwhelming - again this could be due to the way that we have implemented some features (not an issue with the toolset itself.
Integration with provisioning systems (I know this is on the cards); to make the user management of the system at an enterprise level easier.

Planview Portfolios is well suited to provide a single, central, view of the truth. There is clear expansion capabilities to integrate it as a true Enterprise toolset with existing organisation wide (not just delivery) - you can pick and choose what you need to implement and that list gets longer. The ability to quickly gain an understanding of resources within the overall portfolio and some really clever tools regarding capacity and demand modelling.
I think the only challenge we have encountered is modelling our Business as Usual activity to a level of detail - this is due to other tools being very embedded not just in the organisation but across a lot of industries.

Some of the functionality is limited around project planning and flexibility with making changes, running schedules, baselining (would like Planview Portfolios to keep version history automatically like Word or Excel does.
Expensive - would like to have different license types for the users that do more than entering time, but don't need full access so we can lessen the expense.

It's been a very cumbersome implementation. The UI really needs improvement. The functionality is comprehensive, but it needs a more modern look and feel.
Planview Portfolios is the one source of the truth for our Strategic Planning and Execution Process. By using Portfolios to capture and share information regarding our strategic initiatives, we are able to all share in the same knowledge and discuss accurate and timely information when working through our planning processes.

Planview is already working on this but Navigation is tough, I think the introduction of Overviews will help this but there really needs to be a view that a Senior Level stakeholder can log into and see exactly what he needs to see without any clicking around and searching. Overviews is a step in the right direction, but we aren't quite there yet. I am hopeful!
More customized reporting options! Power BI is great but the ability to post real time reports from Power BI is limited. Fast Track reports can be great but frequently have information that is not relevant for us and editing/customizing them is quite difficult. Having a built in report builder option, something an average user could use, would be a great addition!

Planview Portfolios is a great tool for bringing an organization together in their Strategic Planning allowing everyone to be on the same page viewing the same information. Our organization has found the ability to have a single source of the truth to be unwaveringly valuable in our strategic planning and execution processes. We are able to customize the system to meet our needs and we are able to view our initiatives and measure on the same attributes and markers from the same system. No more translating or interpreting from other systems, everything is all in one place.
The main capability Planview Portfolios provides my organisation that no other tool does is allow a hierarchical grouping of the work to the strategy. Particularly showing how work rolls up to deliver an organisational objective.

There's a lot that Planview Portfolios offers and as an admin there's quite a few features that can be customised, particularly with user access grants.
Planview Portfolios is a pivotal solution which is being leveraged by our team. Every single, idea (prospective Project) and project pipeline, timelines, approvals etc, are all managed in the portfolios.
Second, my used feature is the dashboarding and reporting capabilities and adaptability. We are extensively using power bi to showcase trends and we even created a forecast model to identify the next financial year's workload.

Portfolios are great for managing large portfolios of projects, especially projects with detailed schedules and dependencies. I would not recommend it for smaller projects due to the amount of required setup. Also, it's not an ERP system- the accounts are only summaries of expenses.
We use Planview Portfolios for managing all Capital and most Expense Projects including annual planning, ongoing execution, resource management, and financial data forecasting and actuals tracking.

Configuration is relatively easy to learn compared to other tools; however, it does take some time investment. Planview Portfolios is well suited to assist a large, multi-faceted organization in managing a portfolio of work. It does not work as well for smaller organizations or groups only needing to track a small amount of work. It also does not work well for groups who have limited capacity to manage the tool itself (i.e., it requires a lot of support to produce functionality that fits in well with an organization that has already defined how it tracks work). There are opportunities to work with Planview directly (SOW/RAS) to reduce the impact of my previous point, but in our organization's experience, this is ineffective and time-consuming.
