Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure is used to host Virtual machines (VMs) in our organization. The business problem it addresses is we don't have to maintain any physical storage servers after moving the VMs to Nutanix cloud. The physical footprint has been eliminated and we use Nutanix to keep all our VMs running, be it production, development or testing servers.

More command-line driven than GUI
Not enough speed at times
Expensive when compared to competitors

Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure is well suited for any scale of organizations. Best suited when you want to migrate applications from physical centres to cloud which considerably decreases the maintenance costs.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We've been using Nutanix AOS to consolidate our converged infrastructure (CI) to hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) across our entire estate. This has meant quicker deployment, less rack space, and simpler management overall. We stuck with using ESXi as our hypervisor as it gives us the most flexibility with the existing tools we need for operational support. Hoping to add Nutanix Files later on to consolidate the many file servers and shares across the business, additional capacity for this can easily be added via the Nutanix Storage nodes.

Pros

Scales easily through addition of extra nodes to the cluster
Easy to upgrade
AHV included to help keep some of the costs down

Cons

Integration with 3rd party tools
Prism is limited if you use ESXi as your hypervisor
Tied to certain hardware vendors

Likelihood to Recommend

Nutanix AOS is well suited to:
Redundancy and resilience of your hardware
Largely manage itself, lots of checks done via Nutanix Cluster Check (NCC)
24/7 Operations where you have contractual commitments to keep
Support is second to none
Free online educational material (which is up-to-date too!)

On the downside, Nutanix AOS is probably not a good solution if:
Cost is your primary concern, maybe stick with vSphere or HyperV
24x7 uptime is not critical
There may be times when you need to work at a command line for features not in the GUI yet or general support requirements

We run VMware Horizon VDI on Nutanix for around 200 users.

Pros

Performance - Nutanix performs very well, it's fast!
Cost - it's the best HCI platform out there.
Support - Nutanix support has never let us down.

Cons

Hard to identify where they could improve.

Nutanix is the market leader for a reason - price, performance, reliability, support.

We have been using Nutanix as a hybrid solution to support all of our VM workloads around the globe and this has been providing great expandability and has proven to be very easy to administer and maintain.

We use Nutanix AOS for hosting cloud-based PBX systems such as asterisk and 3CX. Nutanix AOS simplifies our daily lives with low maintenance hyper-convergence. It also simplifies a lot of aspects of virtualization, such as fast snapshots and restores, disk/resource expansion, etc.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Nutanix is becoming the heart of our internal IT architecture platform. We are busy migrating services one by on to Nutanix. We are promoting this platform to other departments but some are having issues with the false idea of being vendor-locked.
We have been able to evangelize other business units and we are now providing IaaS using the "project" feature of AOS. This is working brilliantly!

Some custom fields for VM could be great
Entry ticket might scare some people
More SDN functionalities could be developed

VDI deployment used to be the best business case but today, there are no limits anymore, Nutanix is well suited in any situation, any workload and now, the x86 barrier fell down with the support of IBM Power architecture. We are mostly Linux users in the company and it works at the most performance possible today.

We at Dell deploy Nutanix SDS for our customers. Nutanix SDS simplifies management of the hardware and storage from one single interface. Wraps the complexities of architectural details from the end user with an easy to use end user interface.

Pros

Simple management user interface
Flexibility to expand
Ease of planning and implementation of DR strategy

Cons

Integration with the Microsoft platform to be a true Hyper Converged solution.
Improve AHV user interface from Prism

Likelihood to Recommend

Well suited for almost all day-to-day small and medium scale applications involving virtual infrastructure.

May not be suited for customers where startup cost is a factor -- though in a longer term with continuous expansion in the future the cost per terabyte would be less than a traditional SAN.
