What is Ninite Pro?

Ninite Pro is a software management tool designed to simplify the patching and deployment of applications across multiple Windows PCs. According to the vendor, this solution is suitable for organizations of all sizes, ranging from small businesses to large enterprises. It is widely used by IT administrators, managed service providers (MSPs), system administrators, IT consultants, and technology companies in various industries.

Key Features

Patch and Deploy Apps Right From Your Browser: Ninite Pro allows users to manage their Windows PCs through a web interface, facilitating seamless patching and deployment of applications. According to the vendor, the lightweight Ninite Agent instantly connects machines to the web interface, providing a real-time interactive view for easy management.

A Brand New Interface: Ninite Pro offers a user-friendly web interface that simplifies software management. Each machine is represented as a row, and each app as a column, enabling users to update, install, or uninstall apps on individual machines with ease. Bulk actions can also be performed, making it efficient to manage multiple machines simultaneously.

Roaming Laptops and Offline Machines: The Ninite Agent, installed on machines, communicates with Ninite's servers over a secure connection. This allows roaming laptops to function seamlessly within the web interface, just like any other machine. According to the vendor, install, update, and uninstall commands can be issued for offline machines, which are automatically delivered when they come online.

Simple Download Caching Saves Bandwidth: Users can designate specific machines as cache servers, routing downloads through them. This feature optimizes bandwidth usage by delivering requested data directly from the cache server if it already has a copy, thereby improving update speed and conserving bandwidth. The vendor states that configuration of cache server settings is straightforward within the web interface.

Easy Automatic Update Policies: Ninite Pro provides users with the flexibility to manually control apps in the Pro interface. Additionally, auto-update policies can be set up to apply updates as soon as they become available. According to the vendor, apps can also be locked to prevent changes using Ninite Pro, ensuring specific point releases are maintained.

Sort, Group, and Filter: Machines can be organized by assigning them one or more tags, allowing for easy categorization. Managed service providers (MSPs) can add per-client tags for focused reporting. Machines are automatically tagged with their online/offline status and Windows server or workstation designation, enabling users to drill down and view specific machines of interest effortlessly.

See the Big Picture: The Overview tab in Ninite Pro provides a high-level view of all or selected machines, allowing users to monitor the patching status at a glance. According to the vendor, with just a single click, users can update everything or go app-by-app, making software management efficient and streamlined.

Simple to Get Started: Getting started with Ninite Pro is hassle-free. After signing up or obtaining trial credentials, users can download the customized Agent installer. The agent can be deployed via MSI, a silent .exe installer, or a network-wide .exe installer. Once the agent is installed, all software management can be done through the user-friendly web interface.

Ninite Pro Classic Included: Ninite Pro Classic, which is supported and included with every Ninite Pro account, offers integration with remote monitoring and management (RMM) tools or existing startup scripts. According to the vendor, this classic version provides additional flexibility and compatibility options.

Pro Classic Command Line: Ninite Pro Classic's command line is highly configurable and can be used for seamless integration with other tools or scripts, enhancing the overall workflow and automation capabilities, as claimed by the vendor.

Ninite Pro makes third party application patching easy and affordable

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are a construction company with users spread out all across the country. We were looking for a platform to monitor and update third party applications when we found Ninite Pro. Ninite Pro provides a central dashboard where we can easily see the status of all of our workstations and their third party app patch status. With a click of a button we can push app updates out to the organization. We love that the product works both on and off of our network - anywhere the client has an internet connection.

Pros

  • It provides a central dashboard where we can quickly patching assess needs and address any problems.
  • The client is relatively lightweight and doesn't impact user productivity.
  • I like that we have the control to have the covered software products auto-update or choose to manually push updates on our schedule

Cons

  • Although the third party app support is vast, we would like to see it expanded

Return on Investment

  • We don't have to worry that we have vulnerable un-patched third party applications on our workstations.
  • The products works off-network, so we don't have to worry about road warriors going unpatched
