Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our entire clinic runs on NextGen Healthcare EHR. Business office, nurse and physician documentation, infusion documentation, patient portal, analytics. We have 12 specialty physicians in our practice who use this software on a daily basis. We use several plugins such as Luma, Instamed, NextGen Share, and we have interfaces between NextGen and our lab and radiology software.

Pros

Templates and documents are pretty easy to customize to meet our needs
Pre-visit insurance verification

Cons

PXP patient portal has been very buggy with a lot of downtime
Reporting tools can't always pull the data we're looking for
Support can be slow to respond at times.

Likelihood to Recommend

The system has so many options that at times it can be overwhelming for users to try to find what they need. Tech savvy users can accomplish a lot in this software, but folks who aren't as good with computers can really struggle.

We use NextGen Healthcare EHR as our point of care solution for all of our providers and as the hub to the other tools that connect to the system for total whole person care. This solution helps us be the true primary care providers we hope to be by having the historical and real time information at our finger tips for the encounter.

For Primary Care and Behavioral Health Providers in the outpatient setting, NextGen Healthcare EHR is the leading solution because of its ease of use, setup, and workflow customization. It has additonal software like Dental and Population modules that are great tie ins to the EHR that make hand offs and other specialties workflows work seamlessly.

NextGen Healthcare EHR is great for customization to meet workflows and ever changing government requirements. Only issue is the NextGen Healthcare EHR Version upgrades are difficult if you do these customizations.

We have used Nextgen EPM and EMR for over 20 years. We are a multi-specialty medical practice and have always liked how customizable Nextgen is. Within the template editor, we can customize by provider or specialty for a better workflow for our providers.

Pros

Fully Customizable.
User friendly for providers/staff.
NGmobile has been extremely helpful if system is down.

Cons

Lacking in EMR reports that give any detailed data.
Upgrades do not offer a lot of enhancements.
Lab/Radiology ordering.

Likelihood to Recommend

If you are a multi-specialty physician office, it is very customizable, which is extremely helpful. It helps create a more efficient provider workflow.

We use NextGen Healthcare EHR as our EHR and our Practice Management system. So we schedule appointments through there but also contain medical records, build progress notes, bill office visits, send labs, etc. As a cardiology group we are a specialty that not many EMR systems can provide what we need, NextGen has given us opportunities to customize templates and tailor workflows to our culture.

Pros

Amazing account managers that will escalate items when needed and also help answer any questions or concerns we may have. They facilitate projects for us as well.
Recently they brought on TSI which knows a lot about cardiology and has already helped us improve workflows and cut down on clicks.
NextGen also has an amazing HQM webpage to help with MIPS and CMS guidelines.

Cons

I think they could improve on some of the knowledge level their techs have when we create a case. We do not always have the best experience.
Also they could improve on having a little more support for clients that are hosted by them.
Updating the software a bit to have less clicks is a good option for them as well to improve.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I work with practices and help find solutions for workflow, operations, and day-to-day obstacles. NextGen is a tool we help to document patient visits, prescribe RX, document referrals, schedule, and bill.

Pros

Identifies problems that exist in a department or workflow.
Perform routine functions and works well for GP and UC.
Scheduling and billing functions are pretty seamless.

Cons

NextGen completely misses the mark for ASCs, especially multispecialty.
NextGen EHR constantly struggles with UDS reporting based on the EHR documentation.
NextGen EHR struggles to compete because of automation. Most practices want to be dexterous, but it's not sustainable as we look to AI and automation.

Likelihood to Recommend

Nextgen works well for multispecialty physician practices and generally well for FQHC and IHS. I would never recommend it for an ADC or for any type of inpatient setting.

We are a pediatric therapy provider, providing speech and occupational therapy services to children. Our speech language pathologists and occupational therapists use NextGen EHR for documenting evaluations, progress notes and daily therapy notes. The business problem NextGen EHR attempts to solve is to help streamline this process and capture and store this client documentation.

Pros

The integration between the practice management module and EHR is seamless.
The provider's view of the schedule via the inbox is easy to read and navigate and notes can be easily accessed and the template initiated by the provider from this schedule workflow.
Navigating client records is easy and fast.
Templates are customizable.

Cons

The tasking functionality is over-complicated and burdensome. It takes too long and is cumbersome for one provider to task another provider. There is not an easy way for tasks to be addressed, archived, or deleted.
The goals section is cumbersome and clunky. If you want to extend a goal date, you cannot select an end date. Instead, you have to increase the number of weeks the goal will be active, which has a limit to it in and of itself. It would be much more intuitive and easier if the provider could directly enter goal end date.
There is built-in logic to manage when a plan of care is generated/updated. While the logic works for plain vanilla cases, it would be much easier if there was an option to force a new plan of care to be generated. There is a checkbox to do this, but it doesn't always work as expected. The logic, which is intended to help, actually makes it much more difficult.
Modifying the document macros in the document builder is very complicated. There are sometimes multiple layers of levels of documents and there is not a very clear and documented path to make the changes you want in the document macros. There is a lot of useless templates that are in the repository. It would be helpful to be able to pick favorites or have clear guidance on how to make changes. It seems like the software in general is meant to protect users from themselves but in that way it makes it extremely difficult to actually make customizations that are necessary for the provider's specific needs.

Likelihood to Recommend

It is overly complicated for a small practice. I would not recommend NextGen unless the provider has (1) its own dedicated internal IT department and (2) the resources to host in-house. We have our NextGen hosted and it frequently is bogged down or slow. It also suffers from multiple errors. A scenario where it would make sense is a provider's office that can manage the technology without needing to reach out to support.

The NextGen Healthcare EHR is our primary electronic health record. It is used by all of our integrated health service providers: medical, dental, optical, behavioral, and pharmaceutical. We staff approximately 350 persons and provide healthcare services in 17 locations in Michigan.

Pros

Provides a mechanism for documenting patient encounters.
Allows/provides integration between healthcare services.
Includes the practice management components needed.

Cons

Because it is comprehensive, it is tough to learn.
It is very picky about display resolution.
There are many invoices and they are difficult to use. Invoices covering the same items, like licenses, are not co-termed.
When NextGen demonstrates a new product, it does not differentiate between included features and features that come with added costs.
Support is inconsistent. There are many language and skill barriers in tech support.
Lacking response time to urgent issues. There is no workflow to address urgent needs.

Likelihood to Recommend

NextGen is neither as polished nor as expensive as other EMR solutions. The GUI is not attractive, but it gets the job done.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use NextGen EHR as our primary EHR for our clinics. From Scheduling to Patient Care to Billing, NextGen has been essential to in our daily operations. EHR has been essential in allowing us to continue to provide outstanding care for all of our patients. It helps us monitor their labs result, keep track of their care guidelines and electronically send prescriptions accordingly.

NextGen EHR is great for smaller practices, Specialty Clinics and Tribal Health Programs. Overall costs vs functionality seems to be even at least for now. Practices can customize, though a double edge sword, templates to fit their needs as much as they choose. Out of the box, NextGen Healthcare EHR has done well to listen to their clients and have made much improvements over the years.
