our company is one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the country and we have a good number of remote sites which connect via internet links to our head office. we have multiple internet links going to multiple ISPs. we needed to deploy auto failover between two internet links going to a single ISP. To achieve this we have deployed MikroTik router at our edge where it is acting as our gateway and also running BGP with ISP for auto link failover.

MikroTik routers and switches are a reliable low cost products. due to their low cost they are very well suited for small businesses and medium businesses. In some cases even large enterprises are using these products because they provide lots of features at very low cost. However they are not suited to handle large amounts of traffic like at ISP core level.

Our Experience with MikroTik RouterOS

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Initally, we used it as experimental solution during R&D process. It turned out that the R&D was a big success, and we implemented it widely to our clients as part of our solution. Today, the solution has been evolved into a fully cloud managed suite. It adds many enhancement and function which not available natively on MikroTik RouterOS. We also use it on our production and back end system also. It is affordable, easy to deploy (although it's difficult for beginner engineer) and powerful.

Pros

Affordable, it has more features compared to other brand at the same price.
Widely available, by today it's easy to obtained one, even online retailers sell it.
Highly customizable, you may write a powerful script to enhance the function.
Flexible, you can make different configuration approach based on you needs.

Cons

Hardware, current ARM based hardware turned out having stability issue. Uncommanded reboot and hang/lock-up occured sometimes.
Wi-Fi algorithm, in some cases the wireless module has performance issue.
New function that needed by today standard like secure DNS, improved VPN support like WireGuard, etc.
Add more function on the script to easy the management and maintenance, like ability to invoce wireless snooper from script.

Likelihood to Recommend

Usually clients asking for affordable but powerful yet stable solution. While many brands with required functions are way beyond the client's budget, MikroTik easily fit the budget. Hardware endurance also top notch, hardly to have issue on the hardware event after 5 years in service.
Some client's requirement requires ciomplex scenario and setup that may required to use scripting. So far no competitor can perform this with ease else than deploying native Linux server as router. MikroTik RouterOS gave some flexibility on scripting so it can perform complex and unusual function withe easy.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

For more than four years, we have been using MikroTik Routers and Switches in our core, specifically the Mikrotik CCR-1036 and CCR-1072. What we like is the ease of use, as well as how they perform to process data. Likewise, we have deployed the RB devices as a Client CPE, and the results have been more than satisfactory. The problem that we have is the lack of a direct support channel that would help us to solve the few difficulties we have with these devices (ex: Kernel Panic), as well as incompatibility in the update processes.

MikroTik Routers and Switches are designed to be able to handle large quantities of packages, so, small and medium-sized businesses are ideal implementation environments. In combination, they complete the core, distribution, and access ecosystem that most customers require. Using its scripting capabilities, many of the organization's routine tasks can be automated.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

As a Managed Service Provider, Mikrotik is our first choice when we need to build a new network, upgrade existing networks, or replace faulty routers and switches. Since using Mikrotik, we have not had any downtime across our infrastructure and we have been very happy with the capabilities of the routers and switches. It allows us to monitor the bandwidth on any ports and implement traffic shaping.

Pros

When you are creating a firewall filter rule on a router, the amount of options you have is incredible. For example, most other firewalls or routers will not give you the option to select a connection state, a packet size, specify the packet content etc.
You can use the routers in transparent mode, when your router is placed in front of a customer firewall or customer router, allowing only the allocated public IP address to communicate with the Internet and allowing you to allocate a certain bandwidth or speed.
The lowest end model routers have the same operating system, features as the more expensive ones making simple for us to test configuration on cheap equipment before commit to buy the more expensive one. The licensing model is very simple as well and easy to understand.
The cheapest routers also come with one SFP port, which is great as it is allowing us to connect fiber straight into it. No extra PoE injectors and converter are needed, reducing the number of points of failure.

Cons

Some of the wiki articles have not been updated or are not accurate enough. We spent a couple of days trying to find an example of implementing a mobile IPSec client solution. But once this has been implemented, it has been solid (always worked). A bigger community would help, and I am finding it hard to find the time to contribute to these articles.

Likelihood to Recommend

MikroTik routers are well suited for any size customers that require a router which is inexpensive and provides all the features their network administrators need to secure and monitor their network.
I have not found a model that comes with an ADSL model, and I would not consider them for such network connections.
The MikroTik switches' advantage over all competitors is that they are inexpensive with lots of SFP ports, making them ideal for a server room and connecting your storage. Layer 3 is capable as a standard.

We arrived at MikroTik by means of an analyst hired in the company who, faced with the problem of networks that we presented, offered us the solution of the MikroTik router boards, allowed us to know the robustness of the SOOS routerOS, initially it was a solution-oriented to the systems department, then extended to the entire company, thus solving all the network requirements that we had pending.

Pros

It allowed to establish a distribution by areas of the bandwidth allowing to prioritize the access to it to the departments that most needed it
It allows to obtain real statistics by user, IP, fragment of network, department and unit of the consumption of bandwidth of the company.
Different DSL connections were added to obtain a larger bandwidth and thus be able to efficiently cover the needs of the company.

Cons

The configuration of the operating system routerOS is not intuitive, it requires advanced knowledge in computer science and free operating systems for its maintenance.
To make the load balancing is necessary to have more than one MikroTik device so its implementation in case of that being the solution sought is more expensive.
The cost of the devices for solutions at the macro business level is very high, it is a solution whose initial investment requires an important budget

Likelihood to Recommend

MikroTik is suited for large companies that require advanced distributions in terms of contracted bandwidth, and in the same way, allows a single device to specify filtering and firewall rules without acquiring an additional device. There is a range for small companies which is more economical and less robust, but in case it's not necessary, such a strict control over the data consumption of the company is not a feasible solution.

Mikrotik - is it worth the price?

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We currently use 24 routers from Mikrotik, typically for education. Routers are used only by my department. They are used for enhanced education in teleinformatica. Users/students learn thanks to them, about DHCP, MPLS, OSPF, RIP, VLAN, VPN, IP addressing, WLAN, and many others functions of network configuration. We specialize in routing protocols, and Mikrotik routers are very useful in this kind of teaching.

Pros

Routing protocols.
Configuring it is simple and intuitive.
IP addressing, and VLAN creation.
Multi protocol usage.
Mikrotik routers are full of protocols that can be enabled and configured in a quick and simple way.
WLAN and hotspot configuration is simple.

Cons

Not every aspect of functionality is well described and that would be a point for improvement.
There could be a tool for firewall testing.
Open VPN should be more intuitive.

Likelihood to Recommend

It's ideal for teaching - education on second level and for engineers' studies. As I mentioned before it's perfect or learning about routing protocols - from static, through dynamic RIP and OSPF, and on MPLS ending. For SOHO it's perfect, WLAN configuration and the possibility of HotSpot configuration for clients is a blessing.
