I use Microsoft Power BI to prepare an analysis of web content audits - what is completed, late, and coming up. The report pulls data from a SharePoint list and filters based on quarters, completion, and late. In addition, I use Microsoft Power BI to provide budget reports to department managers as needed.

Pros

Filter data by various fields and data points
Easily refreshes data from data sources
Easily allows users to format data in a variety of ways

Cons

It would be easier for users could Microsoft Power BI and Excel used the same programming languages.
Would like to see the online version of Microsoft Power BI be as powerful as the desktop version.
Publishing a Microsoft Power BI file online and then having to save the file is somewhat redundant.
Would like to export each page or chart as an image.

Likelihood to Recommend

If the user is looking for sorted data or limited reporting, Excel with charting and pivot tables is enough. However, if you want to pull in data from several datasets and perform complex calculations, Microsoft Power BI is a better choice. The ability to create calculated fields on the fly that include all datasets is a real plus.

We use Microsoft Power BI for a lot of financial projections, data analysis and budgeting purposes. The features provided make data consolidation and presentation much quicker and easier when working with large data sets. It also speeds up the presentation process by allowing quick and easy to implement graphs and charts.

We also need to have adequate graphs and info to present the info quickly. We also use the system for budgeting purposes. It's helpful to pull large amounts of data and bring it together to create a comprehensive and accurate budget.

We have used direct query approach to get the insights of data and analyze the business performance in real time.There are certain business problems is being addressed by using Power BI such as Consolidation and reconciliation : Getting data consolidated across the sources was the biggest challenge, using Power BI data processing capabilities provides a single platform to integrate the data from multiple sources. Real-time reporting: using a direct query approach provides real insights of the data which eliminates the dependencies on the back end team/processes.There are scope of en digest the tool in areas such as Operations, Supply Chain, Sales & Marketing and Financial Analysis.

We use it for many purposes, but the 2 that involve me are daily backup results, and visibilty of Azure costings. With the use of Microsoft Power BI we are able to show specific, granular metrics for the senior management team in an instant. Without this is would be a long, manual process, once the inital setup has been done, there is no manual input which has saved us many man hours.

Easy to share results without intricate or special permisions needed for audience
Accessible from anywhere

Cons

Doesn't seem to handle large data sets very well
Performance can be slow at times

Likelihood to Recommend

Selecting targeted metrics from a list of many and uncessary is great to cut down the noise and filter out specifics.

It is online only, useful to consider if remote, or off site working

Well, I have been using Power BI from last three years in different sectors like Education and IT. Right now, I am using Power BI to show the student and faculty data for the purpose of getting a good grade for accreditation in NAAAC So, I'm using it to find out the anomalies in the data like finding out the number of faculty joined and left in last five years and what we can do about it by giving suggestion to HR.

Pros

Report View is easily understood as everything in on the one page.
Power BI has a Desktop version which makes it more helpful when one has poor internet connectivity.
Data modelling can be easily done by just dragging and dropping.

Cons

Real-time reports can be made smoother as it is not right now.
Power BI Mobile is not as intuitive as it should be which requires some improvement.
Power BI becomes slower when working with large data sets even with good system specifications.

I mostly use it with my day-to-day reporting which is great it has user friendly interface and work very well. Also, when I am not available, I have taught my director to how to work with it so, he is able to pull reports and make changes, I'm mentioning this why because Power BI is easy understood by non-technical person which is why it is well suited.

Power BI is an easy to use analytical tool. We are using this tool in the department of computer science and engineering for analytic purposes in research. When you have a large data set and you want to derive some meaningful results from it this tool will help you to convert your numbers into interactive charts from which you can derive the insights of data. I am working in the field of data analytics and everyone who is in the same field will love this tool.

Pros

Convert your numbers into presentable charts.
Low cost in comparison to other tools in the market.
In dataset you can use JSON, XML, SQL and Excel files as a data source all on a single platform.
Wide range of custom visualization available such as graph, map, charts, etc.

Cons

GUI is definitely one of the areas they need to improve, lots of options on the desktop make it confusing.
Free version can handle only 2GB data. If you want to upload more data you need to purchase the license which costs you $9.99.
Complex relationship between the table is the problem to handle with Power BI.

Data is the new fuel, we all know that but to use the data we have to derive insights from the data, this tool is best suited for analytics and research. Doesn't matter if you are running a small departmental store or an organization, data analytics will help you to grow faster.
In addition to that for researchers this tool is very useful.

We are using Power BI in our Medical Economics department to help visualize the contracts that we negotiate with the health insurance companies. We use it to understand how those negotiated rates perform over time. We compare the insurance companies' rates to each other in various ways with different metrics.

Pros

Data organization.
Ease of data conversion.

Cons

The relational database only allows one true join so you have to get creative.
I want more positional controls.

Microsoft Power BI has been well suited in 3 main areas for us. First, it does really well at organizing disparate data and combining it all together. The second thing it does well is that it has the capability to modify or transform your data based on logic. Finally, the out of the box visuals cover pretty much everything you need for reporting.

We have just begun working with Power BI to do some data analysis of our student enrollment and certain operational benchmarks related to program participation and school safety.

Pros

Ease of constructing graphs.
Always updated visuals being offered.
Variety of data sources to be able to pull data.

Cons

Does not allow for parameters to be passed to the system as part of a user interaction.
Cannot share data to our shareholders that are outside of our domain.
Is not yet a complete solution. Still using other reporting tools in addition.

Likelihood to Recommend

Quick visual representation of datasets is the strong point here when working with reasonable sized files.
Large dataset files are problematic in quickly giving that representation due to application limitations.
Internal operations being guided by the dashboards is a well suited scenario, but as is the case when working in a collaborative environment, external users will lack your functionality that you have internally.

We use Microsoft Power BI to display customer and prospect data in a meaningful way to our sales and client success teams. Additionally, we use BI in our Sales Management and Sales Ops teams to help us determine trends in our current customer base as well as prospect base.

Pros

Want cool graphs for your next board deck? Great interactive graphs and charts!!
Detailed reports with easy to use filters help you quickly find segmented info
Easy drill down into deeper data. We use it to see trends by rep or customer type.

Cons

The app is great but you can only use a few reports otherwise it is hard to read
It would be great to layer reports or graphs to provide more information in one graph
It would be good to be able to lock reports so others don’t change them “by accident”.

Likelihood to Recommend

Great for deep rich, data pools that have constant change. Microsoft Power BI handles live data exceptionally well. BI is not a substitute for Excel, it is a platform to make data more meaningful.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Power BI is being used in our department to create internal reports within our group. The main sanctioned BI tool for our organization is Tableau, but we have to rely on a central IT group to produce dashboards. With Power BI, we can create and customize our own reports, but cannot widely distribute them.

Pros

Power BI integrates seamlessly with PowerQuery which allows you to easily manipulate source data and add calculated columns for your data model.
Producing a data model is very easy as Power BI makes visualizing the model schema and joins simple.
Producing data visuals is so much more user-friendly than in Tableau. Customizing and producing visuals is very intuitive and there are tons of built-in visualizations to choose from ( however some are not explicitly Power BI approved and may not work properly).
Sharing the dashboards is very easy and end-users can interact with the visualizations.
Data and visualizations smoothly integrate with other Microsoft products such as PowerPoint and Access.

Cons

Although BI is making great updates on a daily basis, there are still some limitations involved with the data modeling and certain visualizations.

Likelihood to Recommend

Power BI is excellent for decentralizing an organization's BI capabilities. It's great both for creating dashboards widely disseminated throughout your organization as well as allowing users to create their own dashboards for use on a smaller scale. Since it's so approachable and intuitive, you don't need to be an IT expert or data analyst to get up and running with it.
