Macrium Reflect - Powerful and reliable

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Since you need a backup of your data in cases something goes wrong, I tried a couple of different programs. I finally stick to Macrium Reflect because it is easy to handle and reliable. Each time I needed a copy of a certain drive, it was easy to restore the data. So far, in over five years I didn’t encounter a single problem.

Pros

  • Macrium Reflect ist easily manageable.
  • Macrium Reflect backs up fast.
  • Macrium Reflect accurately handles scheduled backups.

Cons

  • The program could reduce a bit the space it takes for its backups.
  • It should be more affordable.

Likelihood to Recommend

The program has a lot of features. I like to backup or clone entire disks or operating systems. You may of course also just select a range of folders and files. Furthermore, you are also able to create backup templates, schedule them all and deploy full, differential or incremental backups. The only disadvantage I see is the lack of cloud backups.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Macrium for disk imaging tasks and to produce accurate concatenated, compressed copies of volumes, sets of volumes, and/or disks.

Pros

  • Image drives/disks/volumes.
  • Provide incremental backups through imaging.
  • Provide mountable disk or volume images.

Cons

  • I can't think of anything which needs improvement at the moment.

Likelihood to Recommend

This application is best suited for a 1 to 1 disk image of a healthy drive or volume. While it can provide backup capabilities, it's not a backup solution.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Macrium Reflect internally to create drive image backups of our computers and servers. We also advise our clients on the selection and use of Macrium Reflect to protect their businesses. Macrium deserves our recommendation for our customers because it is more intuitive and less complicated that many other similar applications.

Pros

  • Clear interface for creating drive image backups
  • Reliable, every day backups
  • Accessible log showing successful backups and any failures
  • Creates differential backups that are small in size
  • Fast, easy method for recovering individual files or folders from an image backup

Cons

  • Capability to create an image file to restore directly to a cloud computer
  • Use a different default naming pattern for backup files
  • Support for Linux

Likelihood to Recommend

The free version of Macrium Reflect is licensed for both commercial and personal use. It works well on MS Windows computers, but cannot back up servers, where a paid version is required. The free version does full and differential backups, but not incremental as do the paid versions. If a large volume of files are added every day, a paid version would be more suitable as it supports incremental backups.
The Macrium Reflect server version is very suitable for backing up physical servers.
