Can be underwhelming, but gets the job done

Rating: 6 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Live Broadcasting customer events, as well as on-demand video channels to help our customers.

Pros

  • video quality
  • friendly IBM representative

Cons

  • Archaic interface
  • limited admin functionality
  • out of date design
  • Been using for years and no implementation of new features important to us
  • poor in-app metrics

Likelihood to Recommend

Very limited customization features. Permissions are a mess too if you want to have people assigned as chat moderators for events for instance, but dont want them access to the admin panel.

The quality of the broadcast and live captions work well, but they charge extra for live captions.

For operating a video on demand site, the design of the page is really poor and limited on customization. Been a user for years and seen almost no new innovation on the platform which has been disappointing. The metrics are a mess on the user panels too. They do provide an api link for your external metrics and/or data dumps for using something like tableau, but that features not really something to write home about and a rather basic offering.

This is an expensive platform with limited options and an outdated style unfortunately. We have been getting by for our uses but there's nothing really keeping us with IBM if another platform offering came around.

Service itself is good, but support from IBM is terrible and has impacted our business.

Rating: 4 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Ustream to live stream research sessions to clients that can't attend. We give clients a URL an unique password.

Pros

  • Reliable service - we hardly ever run into technical difficulties

Cons

  • The back end is rather complex and has lots of unnecessary sections. It is not intuitive.

Likelihood to Recommend

The service itself is very well suited to quickly setting up streaming for clients. however, the tech support is almost non-existent, and the help desk team do not read emails properly, so if you ever run into a technical issue, or an issue with your account, you won't be able to get it resolved easily.

IBM Watson Review

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

It is used across the whole organization to help my clients to watch interviews remotely whenever they cannot join in person at our facility located in Milan. We use it whenever it is requested by the client. We also use it to record our sessions, download the videos and make these available for watching at a later stage to reference.

Pros

  • Streaming video.
  • Recording sessions.
  • Easy link connection.
  • Password access to be able to view different projects.

Cons

  • It does not allow for the streaming of two different languages at the same time, with the possibility to record in both languages on two different files.
  • You cannot record a session for more than three hours.
  • You cannot see the name of people who are connected as viewers.

Likelihood to Recommend

IBM Watson Media is well suited for any streaming of video content with sound. You can stream right from your laptop. I never tried from mobile as we always use it from a fixed PC connected with a digital camera and audio system.

IBM Watson's Video Streaming Platform is excellent at everything we knew we needed and even had important features we never even dreamed of!

Rating: 10 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use the streaming platform to stream user test sessions to our research partners and across the entire company. It enables everyone to see our testing as it's happening, to see our methodologies, and to communicate our test results live.

Pros

  • Streams high-quality video and audio.
  • Shows multiple feeds (camera and screen share) in the same view.
  • Quickly change video sources to participant testing sessions.

Cons

  • Sometimes bandwidth causes video quality to become very low.

Likelihood to Recommend

This is an excellent platform for customizing multiple video and audio sources into a single view (e.g. screen share and user's webcam).

Reliable and Easy to Use

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Ustream to allow our clients to remote view research sessions that take place in our facility. Ustream has been consistently reliable, and is very easy to manage. I have not experienced any problems with it.

Pros

  • Easy set up
  • Reliable service - no technical issues

Cons

  • The layout of the back end could be more intuitive. I change the passwords on the channels very frequently and it takes a few clicks to get there.

Likelihood to Recommend

It's a good option for clients with multiple office locations, and researchers/designers in multiple locations, all of whom would like to view the research sessions.

A great video tool for our clients

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use IBM Watson Media to deliver streams in a closed-loop when requested by clients. We never allow open access but always have the videos gated behind a password. IBM Watson Media is used organization-wide and is our only streaming tool, which we use instead of another industry alternatives.

Pros

  • Price.
  • Uptime.
  • Ease of use.
  • Ease of sharing.

Cons

  • Could use a better domain name.
  • More obvious IBM branding.
  • Better chat functionality.

Likelihood to Recommend

For simple video presentations, IBM Watson Media really shines. In cases where our clients don’t necessarily need to do anything complex with the videos live, like time-stamping or other live annotation. We like that we can easily share the link and password and get people into the stream quick. The chat functionality is also a client favorite.

Overall Ustream is a solid easy-to-use streaming service

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

IBM Cloud Video (Ustream) is used by the marketing department in our organization for 2 purposes. The first was to broadcast educational webinars in support of marketing efforts for our brands. We used UStream as our streaming platform and linked viewers (customers) to it from landing pages and emails. The second way we use UStream is for training purposes within our marketing and sales organization. We have sales representatives across the country. Sharing video training via Ustream allows us to bring the entire team (marketing and sales) up to speed on new products at the same time without the expense and delay of a formal sales meeting where we have to fly people in and host them overnight.

Pros

  • Easy to implement
  • Easy to use
  • Fairly reliable

Cons

  • At the time I was using Ustream, there was no way to have an integrated chatroom. We had to use a separate app for that. Obviously integrated would be better.
  • We were limited to 1,000 viewers at a time.
  • Registrants had to return to the email or landing page and click the link on the day of the webinar to view it. No way to capture registrations beforehand and email the link on the day of within UStream.

Likelihood to Recommend

It was well suited for both our webinar purposes outlined above. I guess it would not be well suited to streaming situations where you would need to reach a larger audience.

UStreamReview!

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I'm a analyst on the marketing team. During Dreamforce, I have helped out with the live production sets with the creative video team. The Ustream tool was used to manage different channels during the live broadcast of the keynotes. I used it to cut different highlights for each segment of the keynotes and condense it into a shorter video for the webpage.

Pros

  • Different channel management for on going live broadcast
  • Easy to use interface
  • In-tool cutting for video segments

Cons

  • Easy to use, however could be more modern
  • Hard to cut important highlights while watching live segments

Likelihood to Recommend

I've only used it during live production broadcast during Dreamforce and I found that to be really helpful. The company has used this tool year over year and it has helped produce a lot of great content for the Live page, fireside chats, as well as content for internal use.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I have used it during my help with the creative team to manage different video channels during the production of Dreamforce. It supported multiple live streams through different days.

Pros

  • Livestream management was very useful in terms of navigating to different broadcasting channels
  • Easy to record different segments of the livestream and cut.
  • When a broadcaster goes live, the follower gets a notification.

Cons

  • User interface can be more modern friendly.

Likelihood to Recommend

Well Suited:

  • For big events that need film production such as conventions - Dreamforce.
  • More specifically if you have a production team that needs to handle multiple broadcast channels for different breakout sessions and keynotes on going simultaneously.

Industry Standard for Streaming

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

My company is primarily using utilizing Ustream as our primary CDN for all our live webcasts. We stream content live from around the world and this platform works well (if not best) anywhere. The host side is extremely reliable and we are a huge fan at the multi bit rate streams that seem to work on any low-to-high bandwidth connection.

Pros

  • Multi Bitrate streaming is my favorite feature. Encoders can be configured to send RTMP at a variety of resolutions/bitrates to Ustream or send a single resolution stream and Ustream will handle all the heavy processing on their end. The end result is a great quality stream on low-bandwidth connections and high-bandwidth on any desktop or mobile device.
  • Multiple channels can be configured within the UI that can be accessed online through a Browser. This is a great way to keep your content organized.
  • Multiple user functionality and collaboration is built into the Pro level of Ustream and I recommend using this if you are working with a team or multiple managers and technicians.

Cons

  • Some of the online UI needs to be updated. When creating a high volume of channels, it becomes convoluted to navigate through all channels in the small sidebar. Long titles will run off the sidebar and be able to be unread.
  • No swapping out videos and keeping views.
  • Some of the Pro features should be free.

Likelihood to Recommend

Ustream is best for public facing content and content that will be shared with large audiences. There are limited features for customizing your content other than streaming and hosting the then streamed videos online for future playback. This makes particular use-cases for internal streaming and collaboration impossible to achieve until more features are added.
