Kanopy expands its global footprint significantly in recent years, and the business was looking for a global payment processing solution that would allow customers to easily make payments thru a portal to local bank accounts without incurring any fees on their end. We specifically were looking to integrate payment processing directly into the web portal that customers use for Kanopy. The goal was to minimize more expensive credit card payments and also convert customers who still pay by check to ACH / direct debit. Kanopy has 2 options for invoicing, a direct 'shopping cart' method to pay upon purchase or an end-of-month invoicing based on usage. Integrating GoCardless would allow customers who purchase via shopping cart to pay via other methods than simply credit card, which is cheaper for Kanopy.
Pros
Onboarding and implementation process.
Customer integration for software that can't connect "out of the box".
Customer service (specifically with technical issues and troubleshooting).
Cons
Pricing structures - very specific to each user and seems to vary greatly.
Add additional countries to supported list for bank accounts.
Adoption strategies for users' customers.

We believe GoCardless is the best-in-class solution for global companies who wish to streamline payment processing in many countries, especially when integrating within a company website or supported complementary software. It also works very well for recurring payment situations as it can be very streamlined for recurring & auto-payments. This is NOT a tool for credit card processing, so understand that and consider something like Stripe if credit card integration is your goal. The fees for GoCardless may be highly dependent on the anticipated processing volume and size of your business, so do know that very tiny companies may find the fee structure to be higher. For a US-only business, I'm not sure if GoCardless really would make the most sense outside of specifically for integrating within the software for click-thru payment processing. Where GoCardless shines is when your business operates in many countries and is looking for a seamless solution for your customers that also avoids them paying banking fees.
We use GoCardless to take direct debit payments from customers wishing to pay by installments.
Pros
Makes it easy to set up a series of direct debit payments
Helps us to get paid more reliably
Provides a means to take one-off card payments without having our own card processing facility
Cons
The web-based admin dashboard for setting up direct debits can be a little confusing

Some services we provide (e.g., web hosting) are billed on a recurring basis. Operationally, and from an internal point of view, it makes sense to bill these annually. For cash flow, customers prefer to pay monthly, and we use GoCardless to set up monthly direct debit payments against our annual invoices. This keeps our customers happy while giving us our regular income without incurring the administrative overhead of monthly billing and payment handling.
