What is Cisco Duo?

Cisco Duo is a two-factor authentication system (2FA), acquired by Cisco in October 2018. It provides single sign-on (SSO) and endpoint visibility, as well as access controls and policy controlled adaptive authentication.

Cisco Duo MFA Product Review

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Cisco Duo is used when our users log into their Desktops, it prompts them for a Cisco Duo key, which in our case is sent via their cell phones. Also, we use Cisco Duo to secure our Student Management system and our Staff / HR systems. We are planning to roll out application control requiring Cisco Duo as well. It is a very powerful tool, which we have had to carefully deploy so we do not block out entire groups, or make it very tedious logging into applications.

Pros

  • It works very well with workstation authentication.
  • It works very well with VPN client authentication.
  • It is very stable for applications, such as HR department access
  • It is a very stable tool for wireless network access.

Cons

  • Our biggest issue is if someone forgets their cell phone, they need to either contact us to be put in bypass (which allows them access for a short time) or they can generate keys to be used if they lose their phone or have no wifi.
  • If a client is in an area where their is no access to Wi-Fi, often they need to go to a location to get Wi-Fi to complete the login procedure.

Return on Investment

  • The biggest ROI was ironically from a business perspective. Our insurance wanted us to beef up our cyber security and systems that protect our internal resources. One of the many points of interest was MFM, which Cisco Duo does very well.
  • Cisco Duo forces uses to NOT give out their passwords, and logins due to the MFM requirement. This in itself offers more security to our network.

How Cisco Duo can help secure your end user access

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

A few years ago our cyber insurance company started requiring us to use two factor authentication. We needed something we could roll out quickly, but also had a wide range of capabilities. We looked at different vendors and decided on Cisco Duo. It satisfied our need for interoperability with custom applications, additional support for servers and easy to use app for end users.

Pros

  • Easy end user setup
  • Well laid out administration console
  • Support documentation
  • Single Sign-on integration

Cons

  • I'd like to see better integration for Apache Tomcat. We have a case management system that runs on Apache Tomcat, but are not able to integrate it with Cisco Duo for 2FA.
  • It would be nice to have an auto delete feature after a user's account has been disabled.
  • We are a non-profit so lower pricing would help us a lot.

Return on Investment

  • In the past we had issues with user accounts getting compromised. Since implementing Cisco Duo we haven't seen a single instance of this happening.
  • We've had concerns about access to our custom apps. When volunteers or law clerks leave our agency we can disable their account and Cisco Duo automatically knows to disable 2FA access.
  • The only negative impact was temporary when we informed staff that 2FA would be mandatory.

Cisco Duo is the Perfect MFA Application for your Company.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Duo as MFA for domain login and for VPN login.

Pros

  • It can be easily configured for application usage.
  • Up time is very good.
  • Easy to use for users.

Cons

  • Sometimes we receive client lock-outs and are not sure what causes them.
  • If someone is on wifi with a low signal and connected to a VPN, it will keep sending a Duo push at every reconnect. Not Duo's fault, though.

Return on Investment

  • MFA is necessary now for cybersecurity insurance, and Duo makes it easy to meet that requirement.
  • We have very few complaints or issues with Duo from users.
  • It's not hard to configure the application to do what you want it to do.
