Anaplan as a Financial Modelling tool

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

My team uses Anaplan for supply chain planning in the retail space. The product address problems that are quite different among 15+ epics with scenario planning and multi-dimensionality. The tool helps to make forecasting much easier as the team has transitioned from MS Excel, will almost all options compatible to the ones offered in Excel. We started with North America supply chain and now planning to expand to the other regions, so that the supply chain can be handled in Anaplan across the board globally.

Pros

  • multi-dimensionality
  • time ranges
  • DISCO, if the team is following the best practices from an efficiency perspective

Cons

  • Show which pages are using the modules, so that if the modules are updated we know which pages to update/check.
  • Bring in updates for a revision tag, without bringing in any other updates on the dev side.
  • Export option for revision tags

Return on Investment

  • Standardization/automation across global markets improved >50%
  • Efficiency in terms of team-work, communication improved >60%
  • Time taken for forecasting/budgeting reduced >50%

Anaplan as a flexible planning tool

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Anaplan helps eliminate the offline files created by different teams during the financial planning process. The result is that users have one source of truth with the real-time view, so there are not multiple versions of different files flowing from one team/user to another. Another benefit is that the process is unified based on the previously defined and agreed logic, and everybody follows the same steps and calculations. This helps to build more precise and suitable plans based on the same sources in a predefined timeline.

Pros

  • Real-time collaboration
  • User friendly interface
  • Easy developoment
  • Flexibility
  • Scalability

Cons

  • Missing versioning
  • Lack of partial deployment
  • Multi-filtering
  • Long rollback times

Return on Investment

  • Faster planning process
  • One source of truth
  • Real-time collaboration
  • In-house implementation and updates
  • More precise and transparent planning

Anaplan is a great tool for any FPA organization

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Anaplan to build models for business users, i.e. planning, budgeting, and forecasting (PBF) models, that are customized to their business needs. With Anaplan we're able to connect all levels of an FP&A organization (from analysts to leadership) and beyond to other organizations throughout companies, such as Sales, Marketing, and HR. The models we implement typically incorporate detailed hierarchies with large datasets, transform that data and perform calculations to produce detailed forecasts at the lowest levels, and easily consolidate and aggregate those forecasts to produce high-level reporting. Leadership can then use these reports to analyze KPI's, simulate scenarios, strategize moves, make decisions, develop goals, and set targets across multiple internal organizations.

Pros

  • Integrates datasets from multiple sources
  • Empowers business users to build models
  • Connects people and organizations within a company

Cons

  • Workflow
  • Management Reporting
  • Chart Customization

Return on Investment

  • Reduce hours needed to produce forecasts
  • Increase hours spent on analysis and strategy
  • Empowers leadership to be agile in a high-paced environment
