Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Altium Designer for both schematics and PCB layout. Also creating assembly drawings and BOMs sent to manufacturing. We plan to create scripts for automation in the future.

Cons

Assembly drawings for manual build process, separate drawings for each common part number.
Better scripting language such as Python

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We design and manufacture electronics for UX-rich vending machines. I'm the senior electronics designer in the Eng department. Altium Designer helps us all the way through from generating concepts that can be easily communicated through mock PCBs and diagrams to designing the actual electronics and being able to generate beautiful manufacturing information through Draftman.

Pros

Schematics with hierarchy
High speed pairs tunning (intra/inter length, impedance) with x-signals
Beautiful manuf documentation with Draftman
Very easy interactive routing
3d support for layout

Cons

For schematic symbols, I would like some kind of assistance that can generate basic parts very quickly without actually drawing (rectangular connectors, diodes, transistors, etc)

Likelihood to Recommend

I worked mostly in start-ups and medium size organizations, I think Altium Designer adapts very very well in those. Price is OK, support is great, and the product is fantastic. I still struggle a bit keeping a centralized lib of components.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Altium in our subsidiary to design less complex PCB for our customers. Having a common platform helps us with our productivity at the start of projects.

Pros

3D rendering
Differential pair routing
Easy to find resources online

Cons

High cost of licensing
Cloud base too restrictive depending on the license type
Creation of new components a little bit too complex

Likelihood to Recommend

We do mostly four layers or less, so this tool might be a little bit overkill for what we do here.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use it for our Electronics PCB development. We create our own electronics and Altium is used for creating the schematic capture and PCB Layout, as well as the production files.

Pros

Powerful program with quite some features for relative complex PCB design
Quite easy to generate output production files, so this helps with consistency and reproduction.

Cons

Some features are only supported in Altium 365, and because of our business and policy we are not allowed to store data outside the company, so can't use this features.
From time to time strange behaviour / crashes occcur. Sometimes functions won't behave correct and a restart of Altium solves the issue.
Design rule management. Desing rules are crucial for generating correct PCB layouts and fabrication data. Currently there is not method to verify changes made in the Design Rule during the development.

Likelihood to Recommend

Powerful tool for CAD design. Some features (Altium 365 only features) do require to store data in the cloud, which is not allowed in our company. From time to time strange behaviour and a crash / not responding anymore. Restart of tool might overcome this.
