ActCAD Software Review

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use this software on a daily bases. I design new houses as well as remodels and additions.

Pros

  • Easily set up layers with line types, weights and colors.
  • Can make multiple view windows in paper space and set a scale for each.
  • Import pictures and pdf files effortlessly.
  • Easy print manager with windows.

Cons

  • My major complaint is sometimes the dimensions do not stay where I place them.
  • 3D modeling is complicated for me.
  • Need to specify wall types and be able to create custom walls.
  • Need to have a roof manager to make trusses or hand-stack framing.

Most Important Features

  • The software its self
  • Multiple views
  • No limit on model space area. Can layout lots of drawings.
  • Importing pictures and pdf files

Return on Investment

  • This is a very powerful program for the money spent.
  • We have used this program exclusively for several years now and have drawn 100's of homes.
  • Can't tell any difference from AutoCAD which is the program I learned with.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use the software to keep a record of the projects we are involved in, such as layouts, schematics, technical drawings and whatever else the project requires.

Pros

  • This is one of the most complete packages that I've used, very intuitive, thus saying user-friendly is somewhat on the mild side, as it is a pleasure to use
  • Functionality is straightforward and all pertinent information are right on the screen
  • Its ease-of-use cuts down on documentation time thus allowing me to spend more time where it's really needed

Cons

  • I at this point, cannot offer any suggestions for improvements. This will probably change in the future but right now it's fine just as it is

Most Important Features

  • It's easy, straightforward, intuitive and the functionality, along with built-in features make it a pleasure to work with

Return on Investment

  • Its ease-of-use allows me more time to focus on project needs and completion

CAD Software for the Sole Proprietor

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

When I was trying to establish my practice, I needed CAD software that was affordable, capable, and not tied to a subscription. Having ActCAD gave me the ability to pursue my dream of practicing architecture, do my job, and survive "Life" during a time in history when society provides little to no support or even encouragement for sole practitioners. ActCAD has enabled me to efficiently produce very professional contract documents, details, and 3-D models. Just know that proprietary software will detect if (dgn, dwg, etc) drawings have been created or edited with ActCAD. I personally don't see this as a reason not to use ActCAD.

Pros

  • 2-D drafting
  • 3-D modeling
  • Dimensioning and annotation
  • Project file management

Cons

  • Layer management

Most Important Features

  • Functionality
  • Affordability
  • Ease of use

Return on Investment

  • ActCAD reasonably does what proprietary software does.
