Are you in the Cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP, other) -- you won't be able to use SRM. This does not give visibility into block and/or object storage. Do you have high-performance, multi-tiered storage solutions from vendors like HP, Dell, IBM, or others? Do you have a VMware environment hosted by your shared storage solution? Then this is the tool to link everything together for you.

Pros
  • The SolarwWinds Storage Resource Monitor does good reporting and alerting to an issue. Our service center which has live monitoring uses the tool for real-time monitoring of events. It then creates tickets to action various alarms.
  • Real-time size monitoring of especially thin storage is always necessary to any thin VMware environment.
  • Great historical graph representations of storage related events. Ability to create performance graphs and monitor changes.

  • The list of devices covers the most popular, but adding more types of devices is always helpful
  • Device types make it difficult to connect some times (on the vendor side) but the product does a good job, configuration could be easier for setting up devices.

Alternatives Considered
EMC has a free monitoring and reporting package for VNV that's good at disk-level performance in near real time (heat map). For everything else, we look at SolarWinds Storage Resource Monitor (SRM).

Return on Investment
  • Before we purchased SRM, we have very little visibility of the performance of our disks, which would lead to issues
  • Single pane of glass dashboards allow us to spot issues quickly
  • Capacity forecasts allow us to also tackle storage issues before we hit a point of no return
