It is certainly suitable for agile and innovative projects. For developments that require particular steps and with a simple debug. On the other hand, it is not very suitable for producing flows that move large amounts of data and that require a lot of resources and great stability.

Since I started working with this great tool all data analysis programs have been running effectively. Implementation of projects and tasks have been effective and reliable. Data collected from each department gives us working plan on better management of various programs. The Dimension Merge SCD Transform helps us to load large volumes of data within a short period of time.

Pros
  • It does provide a lot of predefined functionality out of the box along with providing the facility to use complex java code for developers.
  • Mainly like it for small data utilities. It does provide a lot of control for developers.
  • Pricing is, of course, a major plus :)

  • The Slowly Changing Dimension Component saves us a huge amount if time compared to the native SSIS component.
  • JSON Transform is really useful to convert record and send it to rest API.
  • The advanced derived columns allow us to use really cool functions that are not available in the regular transforms.

Cons
  • The community is not that up to date and forum is not that great in response. Probably we should make people aware of the tool more on how to use and its implementations.
  • Talend crashes when transforming a lot of data (millions of rows).
  • Proper training documentation is a must for talend which is currently lagging. This will help users to learn more about Talend and use it effectively.

  • It was built by Pragmatic Works who sold it to SentryOne and now Solar Winds, concerned about future support. SolarWinds is discontinuing support for related products such as BiXpress.
  • Had issues with connecting to certain versions of SQL Server - would fail when deploying one package - had to deploy the entire solutions.
  • Occasional random failures observed with the Filter tranform.

There is no licence requirement for Talend Open Studio. So, this is not relevant question. However, if you are asking whether we will use Talend in future. Yes. We will continue to use it. It's very powerful free tool which caters to all our extra, transform, load capabilities. We just love Talend for it's great functionality and ease of use.

Task Factory has become a key product for our use of doing ETL work in SSIS. Their custom SSIS components allow us to work simply on the data engineering side of things. We can ignore the lower level work needed to connect to disparate data sources. This allows us to work faster and provide more value to the business

Usability
Talend Open Studio is based on Eclipse and is full of redundant procedures to do one thing, like when installing libraries. Sometimes I cannot manually download the libraries that it can't find.

Compared to some of the other transformations I have worked with, it really is pretty simple for the type of functionality you get

Performance
Many times, Talend freezes. When you give a cancel command, it takes several minutes to stop. It also takes a great toll on our PC with 16 GB of ram and I7 CPU, even in idle status. If you are downloading Maven Jar/Libraries, you cannot do anything and have to wait until the task is finished.

Support Rating
There is only one support staff on a forum created by Talend, which hides behind a nickname and does not show his name. They only ask base questions like: -Talend version - Are you in a proxy? -Do you have all the libraries installed? -It is a Jar missing? (how could I know?) -Follow this link on our site or "please ask your administrators" They then wash their hands of my issues.

Overall, the best vendor we currently have on the data side of the house. No issues, issues are resolved very quickly and upgrades go without any issues.

Overall it went smoothly. Had a couple of gotchas with licensing and upgrading but nothing that really stopped us.

Alternatives Considered
Informatica has a limited number of components that you can use. This places a heavy limitation on the capabilities of Informatica. On the other hand, Talend allows you to create your own custom components using Java. For businesses that need to perform a wide variety of data operations, it can be quite useful to have the option of creating your own custom components to satisfy business needs.

I've not found too many tools to bolt onto SSIS that encompass what you get with Task Factory. I have used some Enterprise ETL tools like Dell's Boomi, but did not find it to be very intuitive. Task Factory does not leave you guessing how to use its components. Additionally, their support is very responsive and helpful.

Return on Investment
  • Being Open Source, your costs on the IDE side are zero.
  • There are a lot of programmers with knowledge in Eclipse, they will be comfy using TOS. The development process will be faster.
  • Once you develop your Service Bus using TOS, you can connect easily with other Talend products, like DTS, Big Data analysis tools, etc.

  • We were able to support our developers with Task Factory features and reduce the development time by 40%.
  • Recently Task Factory has changed their pricing module and it seems to be pretty costly for our process. Our business team has started to evaluate whether this is worth it going forward.
