Taking data from various sources including files, databases, web services, applying some complex rules, transforming, aggregating and producing a result. This is what Spotfire Streaming does best.
- If one needs connectivity to special services as secured databases or web services, building interactive web apps, those are probably tasks that shall be addressed with different tools.

BusinessEvents is not very well suited for Cloud native solutions, but it is suitable for traditional enterprise self-maintained data center deployment. And it gives the business the power to define/modify/update the business rules, in a visualized way, instead of asking IT team to maintain them. Generally speaking it is a very comprehensive rule engine solution, but not suitable for "hook on" some other complex computation/data processing logic

Pros
  • Processing events in real-time with real low latency and high throughput.
  • 100% visual program language, which can be extended by common languages like Java, Python and .NET.
  • Reduced time to prototype, create an application and deployment, which reduces the software lifecycle.
  • Real robust engine and server. Barely heard of customers having issues in production.

  • Business users have the capability of changing rules dynamically without downtime in the application.
  • Real-time processing capability decreases latency and increases the efficiency of the features developed in TIBCO BE.
  • Capability of caching the data as well as managing it as an independent entity as TIBCO Active Spaces is a huge addition.

Cons
  • Not all problems are suited to the event driven paradigm.
  • As the complexity of an application grows, finding your way around code in the GUI takes some getting used to.
  • The Spotfire Streaming development environment is built in Eclipse, which is not everyone's cup of tea.

  • We had to write our own business rules interface that matched how our previous systems operated. Web Studio has gone through some great changes but in that time we have made a decision to move to Kafka, Kinesis, and Spark for our events streaming solution in AWS.
  • We did not modify our business process flow to take advantage of BE. If you are not truly running an adaptive business process effort, then BE could be overkill.

Alternatives Considered
We are using Dataflow (by Google). The development time in Spotfire Streaming is definitely shorter because its GUI based. Dataflow handles late arrivals after the window closes, not sure Spotfire Streaming can do that. Dataflow can run GCP as a managed service which is why we chose that tool for our new product.

Drools is an open source alternative for CEP solutions, that provides a business rules engine. Unfortunately it comes without support, while the TIBCO support for BusinessEvents is very efficient. Additionally, TIBCO BusinessEvents suite provides several additional components that could satisfy many requirements, and it can be integrated with existing TIBCO stack, giving great interoperability with other TIBCO products. As well as could be used in stand alone way.

Return on Investment
  • While we haven't specifically integrated Spotfire Streaming into our product development, it has allowed us to see the benefits of real-time streaming data.
  • We have much more visibility into how our longer term roadmap will look and what we should focus on.

  • Positive: dashboard is very informative and extremely powerful
  • Negative: we need to have more capability for data integration - OR for prototyping data integration and analytics, without resorting to something complex and big like StreamBase (which is truly amazing) but requires too much specific knowledge for industrial application. something easier to learn would be great. for example, I was able to learn KNIME and prototype a solution in a week. But StreamBase is too complex.
