RationalPlan vs. Rocketlane

Appropriate as a great alternative to MS Project. RationalPlan provides most of the features needed to develop and maintain mid-level complex schedules. Less Appropriate for large complex schedules of long duration. These can be a challenge due to Duration at top-level. It is also a challenge to generate reports for management - reporting feature is limited.

There is project management tracking from the start till the end (onboarding till hypercare). The bifurcation of project stages and pre-built templates is good; you can assign client tasks. Less appropriate: Raising tickets for developers because there is no escalation management option. Let’s say the developer didn’t reply in 24 hours for a high-priority task; this should be automatically escalated to their senior.

• Portfolio view is great to get a feel for how your programme is running at a glance and which areas possibly might require attention. The fact that you can customise your view by adding your own columns is another plus.
• All project information in one tool is a big plus for me considering the amount of projects we run with. This really improves efficiency and saves me time. You have the ability to add documents to tasks, manage risks, email resources tasks due for projects they are assigned to(might need some refinement depending on your requirements), material db with costing etc.

• Saved Project Manager time by 80-85%
• Ease of use, User Friendly interface
• Reminders : Email notification on upcoming due task to task owner
• Publishing of Periodic Project Status Report

• Automated time tracked should be there
• Every phase has a option to make a call and zoom so time tracked real time

I had to ask for support once and got a response immediately.

RationalPlan is cost-effective and allows most users to prepare and manage their schedule. The software lacks comprehensive reporting and duration changes at the top level of a project.

For our specific needs, Rocketlane fits the bill perfectly. It had just the right amount of features without it being overly complicated to teach the client. The pricing also worked out well: just pay monthly licenses per user.

• Dislike can be that we are not able to add tasks when we are filling the timesheet directly and so then we have to go to that project and create task and then put up the time. If I want to fill past days timesheet then this cause double work.
