It is well suited for environments that are looking for a solution that is top notch for vulnerability scanning, and is the most accurate at doing so. It would also fit environments that have a lot of endpoints to scan or like to have scanning done on an automatic basis. It is less appropriate in environments that want to use a platform right away, without getting training in how to use it, or reading documentation on the product.

I think Symantec ATP is more of a medium or large-scale product where a company has a lot of endpoints. It is burdensome for smaller companies with limited IT support to try and get the product up and running. In addition I feel the new own, Broadcomm, is also trying to angle their product more to the large customer base. A medium or large scale customer in the need of end-to-end protection for their network really cannot go wrong with the product once configured correctly.

Pros
  • Attestation is so easy with Qualys. I find this one feature makes the investment worth the cost
  • Ease of use. Within an hour of first installing, a person can be running compliance tests without a hitch.
  • Great training materials and support. I have never had to take more than twenty minutes to solve a problem either through support or the forums.

  • It was easy to install on machines in an active directory environment, and maintain/update whenever we needed without having to physically go to clients.
  • The interface was pretty well locked down for clients, which was good in order to stop accidental meddling.
  • Symantec has good online resources for current threats, including messages or warning signs and what to do/where to find them on a machine in case SATP cannot deal with it on its own.

Cons
  • Notices some findings which were not clear why they appear(suspected false positive).
  • Working with Qualys support(for example due to the previous point) wasn't the best experience. the response was very slow.
  • Qualys limit the daily API requests. In case you need more, it will cost.

  • Supplier support - Really dire. Technical support off shore was passable, but account management was non existent. Really reflects on Symantec poorly given our spend per annum with them.
  • Cost per annum. At the upper end of protection systems. With little or no account support this was poor value.
  • Proactive communications with customer

Symantec Advanced Threat Protection has done a sufficient job at identifying true positives. However, the UI could be improved and the amount of false positives is a little too frequent for my liking

Usability
Again, the usability of Qualys has been a pinpoint for this entire review. It was easily the worst thing about the product and because of this, I would not recommend Qualys to anybody in my field. This should be something that Qualys strives to improve if they wish to stay in business.

There is a small learning curve, but compared to other AV products it is fairly simple and easy to catch onto

Support Rating
They had a support page within the WAS to report any concerns or seek help. But the UI of that is not smooth. Regardless support staff were pretty responsive and helpful. They scheduled calls to understand and address our problems. Email support is good as well.

Support responds fast for higher priority issues, they have always been good at solving the problems we encounter.

No, besides to review documentation prior to beginning. That is what helped lead to a smooth implementation

Alternatives Considered
We find that Nessus is a great product, on par if not slightly better compared to Qualys in terms of their pricing model. However, Qualys Cloud Platform has better quality reporting, and offers great tips and suggestions on quickly closing a gap and eliminating the risk. In our organization, both products are great and meet our expectations, but due to pricing, we favor Nessus slightly more.

Proofpoint Advanced Threat Protection is a software with a high potential to detect and respond quickly to threats that target email, however Symantec Advanced Threat Protection provides a more complete protection that protects the entire network or devices and endpoints that are managed on a daily basis and has incredible ease of use. While Proofpoint Advanced Threat Protection is not a software that is very easy to use, it requires high maintenance and its protection is based on attacks that enter through email; this is why Symantec Advanced Threat Protection was finally chosen.

Return on Investment
  • The most important thing that happens with this program is to automate one hundred percent the security of my system since this program is in charge of supervising each of the applications and websites in detail.
  • One of the purposes for which we trust Qualys Cloud Platform is to keep our system clean and secure; the ability of this software to manage our vulnerability makes us more cautious about working with it.

  • We haven't ever suffered from a serious security compromise, and I owe that to our Symantec AV.
  • Once installed and set up, it's difficult to pull it out of the environment and try something else, so it has a way of keeping itself stable.
  • Some customers have a hard time paying the price because they don't "see" it do anything, and wonder what they are paying for.
