Oracle Autonomous Transaction Processing vs. Azure SQL Database

• Connectivity between ATP and Oracle Kuberentes Engine cluster seems to drop randomly
• The ATP could come in an even smaller shape as the smallest shape is already quite big . But if must be more than always free, as that version does have connectivity limitations about 20 connections

• A little slow on processing complex or large Views. We use a lot of Views to feed our BI system, and the processing time could see some improvement, IMHO.
• Additional monitoring components would be nice too, automating some built in performance measurement tools would be a nice feature.
• Price can always be improved as well. It’s not bad, but room for improvement.

You get almost all the features of Oracle Database, including the ability to deploy APEX applications, without having to worry about system, storage or database configuration and maintenance, backups, etc. Also, you can start for free and move up adding resources as you need.

Both Azure SQL Database and Oracle Autonomous Transaction Processing offer a powerful and robust database platform. The advantage of Autonomous Transaction Processing is the ability to host APEX applications for free and without any special/complicated deployment or configuration process. Having a rapid development environment embedded for free was the main advantage for choosing Oracle as my cloud database provider.

Oracle Database is "the" serious database. There really is no competition in that field. SQL Database would be a serious competitor through the ease of implementation and the "no maintenance," but since it's too expensive for "normal" use (medium to small applications), it just priced itself out of the market, so to speak. Nevertheless, we do have 2 or 3 large applications that are highly integrated in azure, and for those it's just too easy to use SQL Database instead of the on premise Oracle Database with VPN gateways etcetera.

• Approx 100 times faster spin up than manual setup of an Oracle DB
• 3h annual maintenance for big version releases (18c to 19c) compared to est. 500h annual maintenance with manual database updates

• We don't need a dedicated SQL dba because so many of the database maintenance operations are managed. A huge positive not only in budget but time constraints.
• The ability to scale quickly is the biggest positive as our data needs change constantly.
• Easy to migrate from legacy tools and systems, saving us on the need for redevelopment.
