Fantastic for a small site with a single server to back up with less than 1TB of data. Great for scenarios where business continuity is OK to run a little slow. Not great for scenarios where Disk Speed on the server is important (i.e. CAD files, databases, etc.). Great for restoring Active Directory.

SRM is a must-have tool if your business requires you to failover your VMs to a disaster recovery site and provide valid testing and real-time numbers. Our VP office is always amazed at how easily we are able to satisfy our annual testing and show actual results with time stamps and the sequence of each VM that is up and running. SRM may not be needed in a very small business that does not have the capacity nor the need to have their infrastructure off site in a form of a disaster recovery site.

  • I am not very pleased with the overall licensing cost. It's pretty expensive. Especially if you have a small number of VMs, you are paying a lot.
  • We had a little struggle getting our support tickets resolved by VMWare support.

VMWare SRM is very easy to use and configure. You don't have to be a virtualization expert to learn SRM configuration and execution.

Sometimes we have to struggle explaining the problem and getting it resolved on priority. The overall quality of support team is not as good as it used to be in past.

Alternatives Considered
Datto cloud backup reporting, user interface, and overall functionality are so much better than Avast Cloud Backup that it can barely be a comparison. We had an issue with Avast Cloud Backup that reporting wasn't working correctly, and while it looked like someone's data was backing up it was actually failing and a customer of ours lost some important data. We have not had this issue with Datto Alto

Veeam Backup & Replication is slower than VMWare SRM and doesn't suits our RTO (Recovery Time Objective).

Return on Investment
  • We are able to offer our customers a relatively inexpensive offsite data storage option that can also act as a stop-gap if they were to have major hardware failures
  • we have not had any negative impacts from Datto
  • The ease of installation/setup of Datto Alto has enabled us to mail out the device to a customer and have them plug it into their network to save us time delivering and setting up if the customer was a long distance from us.

  • The biggest positive is that we have a data recovery solution that we can test and verify in a live condition. Prior to this we were only hoping we could recover from a disaster.
  • We've been only running for 4 months and haven't had to use SRM.
