It's absolutely ideal for programming. Today, most programming environments are available for free and enthusiasts can tinker with programming on their own. But Coursera structures that process and presents iteratively more complex assignments to the student. I found it useful for non-programming. I took a refresher Calculus course and the user was able to enter solutions symbolically which I found impressive.

The onboarding process has been quite productive throughout with the best team. The customer support team is able and ever on alert when requested to assist. It has simple user interface which is not the case with other similar platforms. The training modules are easy to understand and put into practice. It meets the set threshold and complies with company principals.

Pros
  • Coursera's courses are extremely good. They are well designed and being a full time employee I really appreciate the fact of how well they are designed.
  • They have made sure that everybody gets enough time to complete it.
  • There is an active community which is very helpful. No matter how good a teaching material is, you might always need extra help. This community can answer your question. And also this becomes extremely relevant if you are taking programming courses
  • There are assignments to test your skills. This is a great way to evaluate yourself. At this point if you feel like you haven't understood something, you can always go back and refer the videos. Most of these assignments can be applied to real world problems as well which is great

  • A combination of presentation, explanation, and reading materials to suit all learning types.
  • An easy-to-use portal that tracks progress and allows you to go back and review.
  • A focus on both the certification itself as well as the background information. In contrast to just "practice tests."

Cons
  • If you leave the projects for the weekends, your Sunday nights could be a drag. But I list this as a benefit also, it enforces discipline on the learning process.
  • I hope Coursera continues to offer no-cost and low-cost learning opportunities.
  • I honestly can't think of any serious deficiency in the product. I am a huge fan.

  • Questions! The Database/site was updated, and I was no longer able to access the questions and choose specific topics to study from
  • There were two CISSP courses to watch videos, I would remove the oldest
  • Put an emphasis that users have a years membership after completing a boot camp

Because the skills learned from the course have proven to be beneficial in the day-to-day tasks that I typically perform. They are either directly related to or at the very least a complementary skill set that allows me to perform my duties overall in a more beneficial way to the people that I support.

Alternatives Considered
We've looked at or used many different LMS platforms including Blackboard, Learnshare, Canvas, Cornerstone, SABA, and many others. Each has its pros & cons but I feel Coursera given its brand recognition and built-in following it's a great value for any organization. I would not want to build out an entire MBA or other MASTERS level online program on it but it is a great way to allow potential students to experience your institutions content for a low price (of free).

I use a variety of sources for training, some because they're available at low cost through my employer, others because they offer courses in a specific niche. I like Infosec for the range of subjects and learning paths that are applicable to my current objectives. The courses are well-made and provide useful and purposeful information.

  • After my courses, I was able to obtain my CCNA (passed [on] first attempt) and my CCNP (passed [on] second attempt). This is far better than the average passing rate.
  • Professionally, I [got] a new job as a network engineer and then promoted to a Network Engineer II after completing my CCNP. I have seen a 40% salary increase over the last three years.
