Pros
  • Contentful provides organized, flexible data models with support for a variety of data types and content editors (e.g. WYSIWYGs, form fields, raw text areas).
  • Contentful has great built-in versioning features with history and draft states so it's easy to make updates and revert when needed.
  • Contentful has an intuitive user interface and good support for multiple spaces (which can be helpful for companies that need separate projects for dev/staging/production).

Cons
  • Preview of changes prior to publishing
  • The ability to use a spell check plug-in when working on content (it doesn't work well with Grammarly)

  • CMS can be a bit hard to work with for the new users
  • Documentation should include more examples of the output and code along with the output.
  • Custom inputs are quite difficult to start and work with.

Alternatives Considered
Contentful was affordable and much simpler than the Java based systems and preferred over a PHP solution

- There is no fear of hitting a limit and suddenly having to start paying 500$ per month when you have been using it for free for a while - You don't have to worry about infrastructure because datasets are available as a service - With an open-source UI based on React, you don't have any limits to what you can build - For some reason, I could not find a service that provided schema as code before Sanity, and I cannot understand how anyone could think this was a good idea.
