Braintree, a PayPal servicePayline Data

Braintree is a good payment processor if you are looking to accept multiple payment methods across multiple geographies and localizations. It is also a good place to keep a single source of truth for customer payments and keeping payment methods on file. If you are only in one geography or would be fine with accepting only a single payment type, Braintree is not a good choice.

For medium, to large companies, I have recommended Payline Data.

Pros
  • Extremely reliable which is incredibly important for payment processing
  • Accepts all payments types we need to be able to accept from all around the world, which is very important for an international company like ours
  • Has a great, easy to use API for building out additional functionality that Braintree itself doesn't support

  • Payline Data has a great gateway and interface. Most credit card processors use a third party gateway to process payments. I liked that Payline had their own and therefore I didn't have to pay another company additional money. So this saves me money. To be honest it is a good tactical marketing advantage for them as well. If I need to log in and see transactions I log in to their site. The company that I used to work before used the third party, so I can't even remember their name as I rarely visited their site.
  • At first, their gateway interface was very blah. It did the trick, but it was so plain and frankly, it was ugly. They redesigned it several months ago and it looks a lot better now. Very easy to use as well.
  • Their API was very easy to set up. I did have a few questions about it and I was able to get very quick help.
  • They quickly set up my account. This was very important to me. I had tried to contact several credit card processors and had to wait for several of them to return my call. I immediately got a hold of Payline and they had the account set up quickly.

Cons
  • Not all companies support the use of Braintree. I wish there was more back-end support on some of the sites we wanted to use. This is more about the sites we want to use and less about Braintree, but it's worth mentioning.

  • I only have one complaint and it is a very simple one and probably easy to fix. But I receive a daily email from them that has my automatic subscription charges that were done early that morning. It shows a summary of the charges and the declines. The declines show a detailed description of what transaction was declined. But the successful charges are not listed. I wish it would list the successful charges as well.
  • The only other thing I wish is, I wish they were free :). But of course, they need to make money. With that being said, I think they are cheaper than some of the ones I have used before. Especially since I use their gateway and don't pay additional gateway fees.

There's a huge cost in migrating payment providers, and we're very happy with Braintree so far.

Usability
As a product, functionality has been fine for us. In our experience, some issues during On Boarding but because we had a dedicated Account Manager assigned to us, these issues were dealt with. Now we are a customer, it feels like they have stopped caring about us or aren't interested in working with us to resolve any issues we have.

Support Rating
Their support is a joke. There's nothing "supportive" about them. Every time I call in with an issue no one has an answer or even a recommendation. I am put on hold and no one ever comes back. It's time to find another processor.

Alternatives Considered
Paypal's Business plan has a monthly charge in addition to the per transaction charges if you'd like to use recurring billing. Braintree gives you recurring billing options without the monthly charge and automatically sends a transaction receipt to the client each month. Once it is set up it is completely hands off which saves a lot of time.

Bank of America merchant products. They charge extra for setups that include manually entered credit cards. They also have high start up costs that would take a while to pay for themselves due since we don't process enough transactions to make it worthwhile.

Honestly, I don't remember the names of the other credit card processors I have used prior to Paypal and Payline Data. I have used other merchant account services that integrate with the Authorize.net gateway. But Paypal was by far the worst. It was overpriced and integration was a mess as they themselves on their own site had outdated information. I wasn't just using Paypal's regular business account but I also had their merchant account services. Which meant I could process credit cards without people even knowing I was using Paypal. Their merchant card services were very sloppy and the API was a mess to set up. But the worst part of Paypal was their professionalism. On the other hand, Payline Data was easy to set up, cheaper to use and great personal and professional customer service. I felt very well taken care of.

Return on Investment
  • The competitive rates we are receiving with Braintree through their program for BigCommerce enterprise customers have saved us quite a bit in sales costs.
  • Braintree's fraud detection is likely set to very high as when we switched to Braintree we only received 1 fraudulent transaction in 2 years which is a huge relief.
  • Prompt disbursements have granted us faster ROI than other payment processors.

  • They have been easy to get a hold of if I have a question
  • They seem less expensive than some of the other processors I have used.
