Azul Platform Prime vs. GraalVM

Azul helped use reduce and more efficiently use our AWS EC2 resources. We approached them in Q3 of 2021 with the goal of reducing our overall latency on the JVM 8 platform. They managed to do that for us in such a way that we could expand our options within EC2 for machine architectures and take advantage of additional resources on existing infrastructure that OpenJDK could not at that time.

I'd recommend the platform for teams that are looking to focus on their business problems and not wanting to allocate engineering staff to be full time JVM engineers. I'd also recommend them for companies that have a large extant JVM systems that want a fairly easy way to optimize their current systems without entire rewrites.

If you want to have a cool VM, don't spend too much memory and mainly being multilanguage go ahead. Be aware there are some points that can be improved like a couple of languages are not accepted so far. Like used to, it's easy to use and you can find a lot of information regarding the tool so if you need to do something fast, it's a good choice.

• It should be possible to use GraalVM EE to distribute native images of JavaFX applications for mobile platforms, especially for Apple platforms.
• Native Images are a game changer. However, compiling complex applications can be a pain. Better support for an improved transition process are a must.

Prime support has been responsive in helping us tune our JVM parameters and diagnose any lingering Java resource issues.

The support we received when porting legacy applications from the GraalVM team and community was commendable. We were able to get assistance in introducing alternatives for the libraries we were using where appropriate. GraalVM support was also able to help us with some configuration options we were stuck with for configuring deployment environments on AWS compute.

Oracle was costlier whereas OpenJDK had less frequent updates. Azul was average of both of them, so it was choosen.

GraalVM makes creating packages and native apps simpler, and this improves distribution. It also brings native image support [that] makes compilation and distribution easy and effective.
