MoPub is perfect for US in app campaigns. They are able to offer inventory worldwide, but clearly the US is their home turf and the place where they feel most comfortable. They work well for performance campaigns, but I would not use them for branding purposes. They are very responsive and keep improving their product offering to stay competitive.

As I've alluded to before, Yahoo Gemini! is particularly well-suited for that extra bit of marketing spend and those last few needed leads and MQLs to get you over the hump. We definitely find that the ROI is well worth it, but it's also not the type of channel that we're gonna drop half of our budget on. The scalability is limited to an extent.

  • Similar interfaces compared to Bing and Google -- if you've operated one, you can operate any of the three.
  • Proactive Customer Support -- Yahoo was diligent about having contact with us about the platform.
  • Limited but strong ROI -- Gemini spent maybe a 10th of our Bing and Google budgets, but always performed well in terms of ROI.

Cons
  • Their take rate is not transparent, its unclear the margin percentage.
  • Not a lot of premium publishers on the platfrom, mostly gaming.
  • Discrepancies keep arising between impressions served and billing numbers.

  • More robust and sophisticated reporting capacity: front end metrics are available with different granularities, but lacking in insight to guide optimization strategy
  • No display/programmatic buying options as yet.
  • Audience targeting could be improved and audience / lookalike modeling could be improved. That said, geotargeting capabilities are very good.

Usability
MoPub is a great SSP. It is a trusted partner that can help you scale campaigns as well as educate the client about the benefits of programmatic advertising. They have a lot of inventory and a great support team. I wouldn't say they are perfect because reporting is not very good and some billing issues are not as transparent as they should be.

One of my main pain points with yahoo gemini is that the product is very difficult to use and the UI seems like they took a skeleton of a similar product and made it bare bones functional for the purpose of generating ad spend. It is a huge barrier for new customers and I feel one of the main reasons they have new customers at all is all the free trial dollars they offer.

Support Rating
MoPub's support is really good. Their team is knowledgeable on their product and the programmatic ecosystem in general and they are very helpful. The only 2 things that I would point out would be that their response times are not very fast and that there is a lot of rotation on the account management team.

They were always super helpful during training and demoing and would answer any questions we had. We didn't have a direct account manager, which would have been nice, but I just don't think their size accommodates for that type of set up. They are very knowledgeable and help guide you through a set up for each particular client.

Alternatives Considered
We've been attempting to make AppLovin Max perform the same way as MoPub had for us. The value we get from AppLovin Max differs from the ROI we get from other mediation platforms. We keep convincing ourselves that AppLovin Max will eventually function similarly to MoPub.

Yahoo Gemini is a more robust version of Outbrain and Taboola. It does offer mobile search, which they do not, and you have more control over your targeting, ad formats, and platform preference. Difficulty of campaign setup is pretty minimal on any Native platform, but Gemini does seem to have the least strict approval process, which is nice with both Facebook and Twitter making it difficult to target and run ads for certain products/topics.

  • CPMs are low, which translate into good CPAs and more budgets.
  • Possibility of rebate programs for big volumes can also increase ROI.
  • Lack of clarity on billing numbers reduces profitability for a few months.

  • For high volume topics in consumers electronics, Yahoo! Advertising does well driving awareness to product pages and generating interest.
  • In B2B sector, Yahoo! advertising does not perform as well drive volume of sales due to niche user profile.
  • For impression based results, MMM has credited Yahoo! Native as a top performer on bottom line ROI results.
