Amazon S3 Glacier vs. Metalogix Archive Manager

As described in the use case, it is perfect for backup data storage where you do not expect to retrieve the data often. Think of it as a data dump; it is nice to know you have a backup, but it actually is expensive and somewhat difficult to retrieve everything.

• Glacier is an inexpensive solution to the problem of storing rarely-accessed data for years.
• You can configure S3 buckets to transition objects to Glacier with a few clicks.
• It is easy to get started with Glacier; there is little learning curve and few concepts to familiarize yourself with.

• Email archiving and retrieval - leaves a stub in the users mailbox so they can still see and retrieve emails directly from their mail client.
• Very little admin or maintenance required from IT.
• PST Scavenging - MAM has a tool that will hun the network for rogue PSTs, and import same into MAM so the PST can be deleted.
• The Metalogix team are one of the best support teams we've ever dealt with.
• Prompt, knowledgeable and friendly.

• Archive Manager has a very steep learning curve. In some areas it seems unnecessarily complicated. You can either spend a great deal of time reading the never ending documentation or pay for their installation services.
• Metalogix was recently acquired by Quest. Since this transition, their support had greatly gone downhill. The last couple of times I have opened a ticket I have been asked for a service tag. Metalogix products do not have service tags and the front level techs seem to be unaware of this.

It is difficult to delete the data as you have to wait for inventory and then bucket modification has to expire.

Customer support is great and I will typically work with the same representative every time. He is very knowledgeable in the product and has been with Metalogix for a long time. I am concerned how the acquisition from Quest will affect this. It seems like their pool of knowledgeable support representatives is small.

Amazon Glacier isn't a direct competitor to the products I've listed; it could compare to the clouds/data warehouses each of these products use to store their data. In the case of CloudBerry, Amazon Glacier is used with it to create a complete archival backup system. That said, when using Amazon Glacier along with a product like CloudBerry, you can create a reliable, inexpensive cloud backup system for retaining HUGE quantities of data for much less than these other cloud backup solutions. HOWEVER, if you want to restore said data, the cost and complexity begin to become a major concern, so Amazon Glacier should only be considered in situations where you don't plan to touch the data regularly, if at all, once it's at Glacier.

Archive Manager is hardware agnostic where some others require a hardware appliance and licensing was a much lower cost for us.

• With this now we are storing data for less cost as compare to what we were paying earlier
• Increased the data access limits

• Archive Manager has saved me from having to buy more expensive storage. I am able to save archived files to much less expensive hardware.
• Exchange server performance is improved since messages are replaced by shortcuts resulting in much smaller databases.
