AlphaSense is very well suited to investing teams that need a research management system that has a robust database behind and rich content management features for note-taking. AlphaSense may not be well-suited to individual investors who want data access but don't need to be sharing notes to a wider team. The sharing features are what make AlphaSense most useful.

Owler is best used as a supplemental asset, as it allows you to get very granular on specific prospects. I believe its limitations lie in the fact that while you can see the competitive companies, it's difficult to get any prospecting information out of them ie., contacts, without going for the highest level plan.

Pros
  • Summarizing information across multiple company documents via their new Generative Grid tool.
  • Aggregating the latest insights from diverse sources - broker research, expert insights, company documents, and news.
  • Providing a repeatable way to query information.
  • Smart keywords to help you search, e.g., car = auto = automotive.

  • Great industry info.
  • Really good industry- or company-specific rss feed.
  • Love the funding/merger/acquisition alerts that we get on companies and portfolios that we follow. Often even more timely than Crunchbase since it's based on press releases rather than Crunchbase's data team reaching out to VCs to get their portfolio updates.
  • Pretty good firmographic data on companies (# of employees, ann. revenue, website, c-suite members, etc.).
  • We get all these great benefits for free!

Cons
  • The whole platform should be much faster with less lag.
  • The layout of the document search isn't great. Often, I find it hard to expand sources or dates.
  • Financials sections should be customisible, i.e. bolden certain ratios, remove others etc.
  • "Error loading documents, please refresh the widget" should be seen fewer times than often.
  • Why can't I export events dates to my Outlook calendar?

  • The information provided is useful but at times the variation with other websites and tools is substantial which makes it difficult to rely solely on owler
  • Information only about bigger companies is available not for smaller and research on smaller ones are important as there are not many tools that do that
  • There are few companies that appear as defunct or do not exist but in the actual market there is a lot going on with them and being in market intelligence industry owler needs to capture that
  • It would be great if they provide revenue or growth of the in the past three years or so. As it would save our time and efforts to some extent
  • They need to maintain the database in aperiodic manner with precise information

AlphaSense is a very useful tool and is reasonably priced for our organization. While I may not be a hyper-active user, it's a great resource when I need to quickly do a competitive landscape survey, review publicly available documents (transcripts, etc.), or review Wall Street research

Not really an applicable question as this is a free service, but if they charged $100 / year (GageIn's price) I would still license the service.

Usability
For my daily work AlphaSense is inevitable, as it holds a real added value compared to most of the CI platforms. It really makes my work more efficient and contributes to better strategy and decision making in the company. Datalog is
available up to 15 years, which is a real advantage compared to other CI platforms that can only start competitor monitoring following the signature of the agreement.

I think it's well designed but always room for improvement. Maybe more customization in layout or information presented. Maybe even a layout that allows comparison and ranking of companies in a similar industry or vertical, or company size, and geography

Reliability and Availability
The availability of Alphasense is great. I have used the software for multiple years and cannot remember ever having an outage issue. This is surprising actually, as I use other software applications that do not have regular outages, but still have outages periodically. Alphasense, on the other hand, never seems to have any outages. Good sign if I can't remember the software not working :).

I have yet to see the platform down or running slowly, but there have been multiple instances recently (Q2 2015) when the user links to a news story and Owler gives an Oops message. Users simply click on the story a second time and the story is displayed. This is a nuisance bug. I also have a sense that the system is not processing alerts as quickly as before, but I haven't tracked this closely, so I could be wrong about it.

Performance
Loading or performing searches on AlphaSense platform is reasonably fast for most of the time. However, it is sometimes unacceptably long for me to load PDF files (earnings presentation, supplementary financial report) on AlphaSense. Certain features might also take very long time, such as loading for "similar tables" across EDGAR filings, or downloading tables from EDGAR filings

The news precision, which is the most important feature for me, is very accurate. They have editors review the news to ensure it is properly tagged by company and event type.

Support Rating
Customer support is very prompt. I get personalized support for search recommendations and content that I could not find in my own search. Support checks in with me on a bi-monthly basis to keep me informed of the many different feature additions, I cannot find a more kind, understanding, and supportive team.

Online Training
Trainers address the basics, and such training was meant for new users. Instructions are really helpful by providing scenarios that our team will face in our daily tasks. It will be more thoughtful if the training is conducted by case studies so as to allow new users to get first-hand experience during the training.

Focus on setting up companies that have limited news coverage first. Public companies are well covered and it is easy to track them. Furthermore, the surfeit of news around public companies can crowd out smaller companies with less news. It is smaller companies where you are most likely to see a benefit in their tracking of news, blogs, press releases, and videos.

Alternatives Considered
Compared to FactSet and PitchBook, AlphaSense is a good tool to fill my suite of financial analysis. PitchBook is superior for private company and transaction data, as well as screening for similar companies (the sourcing feature of the job). FactSet is superior for financial analysis for public companies, as well as charting data. AlphaSense is superior in research for documents and deep dive industry research (mostly qualitative) and grabbing data from financial documents

Apollo is more of a complete system for things like sequences, tracking sales, meetings, recording meetings. It has a very strong search capability for individual contacts that can be broken down in many ways. Like job status, titles, geogrpahy. It also gives insights into technology in use and intent

Scalability
The sharing features provides by AlphaSense mean that it can be readily scaled for teams within an organization and, subject to compliance requirements, with client organizations. The ability to share annotations of transcripts and investor releases is valuable, and facilitates collaboration between analysts.

Return on Investment
  • Research speed has now increased to a single day, allowing us to find everything we want about an industry, compared to 3-5 days before with Alphasense.
  • Comps analysis, gathering detailed financial information, is now seamless and can be completed in less than 1 hour, compared to 1-2 days.
  • Expert interview access, before Alphasense, we had no way of including this into our analysis. This has significantly improved the quality of our decisions and research.

  • Owler has enabled those in my organization to demonstrate their knowledge on companies to clients without spending too much time working to procure information from various sources.
  • Owler contributes to a more comprehensive analysis of companies when making investment decisions.
  • Owler can be frustrating to use and inefficient as a result of a lack of robust data quality measures.
