User Testimonials
AlienVault OSSIM (discontinued)Splunk Cloud Platform
Likelihood to Recommend
The most obvious scenario in which OSSIM is well suited is in a single office/home office (SOHO) or small business, in which budget is reduced but asset discovery and vulnerability management are greatly needed and appreciated. OSSIM is lightweight and free, so the real challenge to face is to hire or assign an administrator to manage and operate it, instead of any investment on an expensive appliance. Also, as resellers, promoting usage of OSSIM to customers charging for professional services for installation, administration, and maintenance (remember that OSSIM doesn't have official support from AlienVault) is a great asset for the organization.

I will highly recommend this software because using Splunk
Cloud has helped us become more proactive about handling our security concerns
and better manage our environment. It is one of the finest security software
that is easy to use and also provides analytics. It has excellent features like
creating dashboard security and managing features etc. So you must give it a try once!

Cons
  • Creating custom rules is a bit complicated
  • Reporting could be improved
  • Agent has caused conflicts with a couple of our other applications

  • Some of their more advanced features, like ITSI, Machine Learning, or Security Analytics, can be very challenging to setup and configure.
  • Splunk Cloud support has been a challenge in the past. They are getting better, but they have had problems responding in a timely manner to issues.
  • These are only some minor observations of things I have had to deal with. In general, Splunk is a solid product that is fantastic to use.

Usability
AlienVault OSSIM is far easy to use and manage - provided you know what you're doing. As any SIEM application, there is some background knowledge required in order to take advantage of the product's functionalities, such as the log correlation and analysis. Other than that, the application is quite usable and robust.

What it does well:
- Powerful SPL query language for advanced users
- Excellent visualization dashboards
- Comprehensive documentation and community support
Where it needs work:
- Steep learning curve for SPL syntax
- Non-Intuitive UI for beginners
- Complex administration and data model configuration
- Search performance degrades with poor query optimization
Bottom line: Enterprise-grade tool requiring dedicated training investment. Best for teams with experienced analysts.

Support Rating
Everything is done through MSSP and installation pro services. Once those hours are burned up, then you're on your own without a lot of help. Typically the pro services hours aren't enough to get past 60 days and MSSP are hit and miss. We had a miss for installation helpers.

Splunk Cloud support is sorely lacking unfortunately. The portal where you submit tickets is not very good and is lacking polish. Tickets are left for days without any updates and when chased it is only sometimes you get a reply back. I get the feeling the support team are very understaffed and have far too much going on. From what I know, Splunk is aware of this and seem to be trying to remedy it.

Alternatives Considered
AlienVault OSSIM as the first experience with a SIEM is very fine, especially if your company is an SMB. Every SIEM shares some features in common with other products, features such as log retrieval and normalization. So if you stick with principles, you can learn other SIEM products as well. If your environment is not of a minimum size, LogRhythm might be overkill for your network, same with McAfee Enterprise Security Manager.

Microsoft Dynamics is far more complex and far more costly to implement and configure in comparison to Splunk. It can be useful for integrations into existing Microsoft databases. Grafana is quick and easy to deploy and configure. However, it lacks the scale required for an enterprise of our size. It is great for smaller test cases.

Return on Investment
  • OSSIM and the installers didn't really help us optimize at installation. OSSIM went without optimization for almost two years before that fact was noticed. I think this decreased ROI.
  • Finding and researching incidents is much faster with all data available. Sometimes too much data, though.

  • Splunk Cloud has had a positive ROI in helping more efficiently track the cause of Help Desk Tickets.
  • The billing model which is based on the amount of data from logs uploaded doesn't alert if a threshold is approaching. This can have a negative ROI.
  • The training that I have taken while in-depth and focused is pretty expensive.
